Flight 93 memorial: 'Giant mosque' (Pictures don't lie)
World Net Daily ^ | 7-25-07

Posted on 07/25/2007 8:14:17 AM PDT by Bladerunnuh

The planned crescent-shaped "memorial to heroes" of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania is nothing less than a huge outdoor mosque that pays homage to Islam, charges the author of a new book.

The primary feature, he says, is the giant central crescent of what originally was called the "Crescent of Embrace" design. A person facing into this half-mile wide crescent – still present in the superficially altered "Bowl of Embrace" redesign – will be oriented almost exactly at Mecca.

This is an old story. But noone’s making enough effort to stop it.

I want to visit (and I can, easily) before they ruin this place.

I guess if you look at it, forget the fact that it’s merely 3/4’s of a circle and use a wireframe model, yeah, it could look like a crescent. Unfortunately, it’s close to lunch, and if I try hard, all I see is a red croissant roll.

Its a memorial for the good islamofacists who killed innocent Americans in the name of allah. But of Course!!!
Has this thing already been erected?? If not better stop this idiotic “artists conception” of a memorial.
I think Crosses, Stars and American flags would be a more fitting tribute to those who were murdered.

It reminds me of this building in the shape of a swastika found with Google maps— Like no one knew what was going on... right..

I’m pretty sure they redesigned that due to the public outcry. I haven’t seen the updated overhead pic though.

You are very late to this story. First, the design was not intended to be an Islamic crescent, but a semi-circle of red maples, like metaphorical arms protecting the crash site. Second, the design was changed a year or more ago precisely because nut cases like the folks over at WND made a stink about the original design.

This Just proves that what some people interpret as an artist conception of a memorial is also interpreted as crapola by others.
Anything that diminishes the scope of the tragedy in the minds of people is not a worthy memorial. The people spoke.
An artist was offended. So what?

Pictures don't lie, but World Nut Daily comes close on this one. The design was changed due to public outcry, it is now a "bowl" shape. The new design is in a here on the memorial webpage (it won't allow right clicks, so I can't copy and paste it here).

I used to like WND, but lately their credibility is in the toilet and heading towards the sewer.

The thing that irks me most about WND is the fact that they have the image of being a Christian site, but then they hawk books left and right, and have adverts for all sorts of goofy health products. Pick a personality and stick with it, you know? Are you Christians or snake-oil salesmen?

The designer and prize committee envisioned this memorial as a statement of reconciliation. I (and probably many others) believe this should be a monument to the heroism of the passengers and crew.

Some changes have been made, but not enough in my opinion.

Also, I’m still waiting to hear that those who fought back and died will receive some appropriate medal acknowleding their courage. Though civilians, they were on the front line struggle of terrorism. This is the new reality: Any of us may be called upon to fight back at any time.

The swastika was an ancient Hindu symbol of good fortune before the Nazis corrupted it. I’ve seen buildings built in the US in the 1880’s that incorporate it into their design. The Montana Club in Helena for one.

Regardless of what was allegedly intended, the effect is not a good one. It should be of the heroism of the passengers and crew on that plane, not some sappy, treacly symbolism and mush.

Did you read any of the comments of the architect who designed the original design? He was forever blathering on about the need for reconciliation with Islam and talked quite openly about using Islamic imagery.

The design was changed, but I would not consider the people who objected to be nut cases. Of course, I don't think reconciliation with Islam should be the primary focus of the Flight 93 Memorial.

Thanks for posting the picture, I kept getting the Windows IE pop-up saying "Sorry, right click has been disabled" when I right clicked on the picture to copy the link.

Yeah, you are right...still creepy, although I think a large part of it is that it is displayed in "fall colors" for presentation aesthetics.

Granted, it's World Net Daily, but this photo does have me steamed. Seriously, what is wrong with us?! What are we smoking...

Some things to consider...

1. It's WND, as you pointed out.

2. That image is an artist's rendition; I seriously doubt it will be painted red.

3. Just because something is shaped like a semicircle doesn't make it a crescent representing Islam. The Vietnam memorial comes to mind, with it's bend halfway through. Arial photo of Vietnam Memorial. Granted it's not a crescent, but, if one is so "conspiracy theory" minded, one could make the argument that it's in the shape of a Masonic symbol, with the triangle shape, etc. Do you see how rediculous it gets?

4. I seriously doubt the direction of "east" (which is not only where Mecca is, but also Jerusalem) is that controversial. IOW, it's an easterly direction a center viewer would face, not necessarily "Mecca"; that's World Nut Daily spin for you.

This article is exactly why I've put a critcal view on everything WND puts out lately, and indeed, for me, puts it over the top. Seriously, aren't there more pressing things to report on? Maybe we'll see a story on Bat Boy entering the race for president next, on WND.

To me, the power of that site is that Flight 93 crashed into a farmer’s field. It was the transformation of an perfectly ordinary piece of countryside into something more.

To my mind, the ideal Memorial would be a modest obelisk with a brass plaque on each side. One listing the names, one with a dedication, one with excerpts from President Bush’s 2002 SOTU speech and one that simply says “Let’s Roll”. Everything else about the site should have been kept the same as it was on the day before the crash.

So what do you make of the architect's own statements that he used Islamic imagery and feels that reconciliation with Islam should be the primary focus of the memorial?

Have you actually read ANY of the press on this? Seen either of the designs? Checked out the statements by the architect?

Rawls gave Kirk Swauger of the Johnstown Tribune Democrat the address of an Islamic website – Islam.com – that has a Mecca direction calculator.

"While I was on the phone with him, Kirk set the calculator to Somerset, Pa., 10 miles from the crash site, and clicked the 'view qibla direction' button. When he placed the resulting Mecca-direction graphic over the original Crescent of Embrace site plan, Kirk said to me: 'Yup. It points to Mecca.'"

Another feature, he says, is a separate section of the wall – centered exactly on the bisector of the giant crescent – that is in the exact position of the star on an Islamic flag.

He says there also are 44 inscribed glass blocks placed along the path that Flight 93 followed to the ground, matching the number of passengers, crew – and terrorists.

Yup, it's all paranoid racisism...
