Brown is the new white
American Chronicle ^ | 7/25/07 | Robert Paul Reyes

"According to Macy's, one of its goals is to provide an exclusive line of clothing geared toward Latina shoppers looking to express cultural identity through fashion.

However, one such item might have actually offended potential Hispanic customers, so the company pulled it during the weekend."

Quote from MyFoxChicago.Com

The marketing experts at Macy's are so dense they actually came up with the bright idea to sell a T-shirt with the logo, "Brown is the New White."

Who did the marketing research for Macy's, the KKK? The slogan "Brown is the New White" implies that Hispanics should attempt to pass for white. The not to subtle message is that being white is the ideal, and non-whites should strive to be like the Caucasian majority.

I'm a fair skinned Latino and I could easily pass for white, but I would never betray my racial heritage. Latinos, of all skin hues, are proud of who we are, and we want to be accepted as we are.

The motto "Brown is the new White" also implies that whites are the original occupants of America and Hispanics and other minorities are Johnny-come-latelies. Hispanics were thriving in California and in the Southwest centuries before Europeans set foot in America. If anything, the T-Shirt should be emblazoned with the catch phrase, "White is the New Brown."

Macy's doesn't know its market, in order not to repeat such a stupid mistake they should hire more Hispanics to fill corporate positions.

You could, just could, find this racist because it’s racist.

I’ll put it way - the defacto offical color of the KKK is white, of the Race, it’s brown.

I find that racist but unlike many here I've never found racism to be the biggest bogeyman under the bed and resist finger pointing and breast beating over it I'm an unapologetic cracker...southern.

I agree and what I find is that the more the term is used the more it means nothing...which I think is a good thing.. if illegal aliens can't use the race card what else are they going to do to defend their agenda?

The Hispanic irredentists and chauvinists have to be called on their lies about the Spanish/Hispanic role in US history. They always blow it way out of proportion. Any time you want to evaluate the Hispanic culture and civilization take a look at Nobel Prize winners but be sure to leave out the Peace Prize and Literature Prize because those are chosen on a politically correct basis

Last year, I went to the Tamale Festival in Indio, Ca and was surprised to see lots of T Shirts for sale that said “I am not Hispanic, I am Mexican”. I always thought “Hispanic” was the PC term. It made me smile.

No it doesnt. What is this person smoking? It doesn’t even remotely imply that. If anything it implies that being brown is better than being white...

I'm not even sure Latino is a race.

Of course, it isn't -- though it may well be that the Federal government counts it as one.

Many Latinos are mixed-race to be sure, but Latino does not equate to non-white. I suspect their white Spanish ancestors would be mightily confused by modern insistence that their 21st century descendants are not.

Both statements are Racist.

“”White is the New Brown.” just as racist as “White is the new Brown”.

The slogan "Brown is the New White" implies that Hispanics should attempt to pass for white.

No, it doesn't : It implies that "white" people are being replaced by "brown" people, IMO. It is racist only in the sense that it reflects the triumphalist attitudes common (and often posted here) among the La Raza/Atzlan/ MeCha crowd.

Hmmph - I read BITNW as indicating that B's would soon be the majority here (i guess I need to adjust my reading glasses)

The statement is offensive because it divides by race and because it describes a situation that a majority of Americans oppose and that is being forced upon us by a government that refuses to enforce the borders. Now THAT is offensive...

That's how I read it....as a metaphor and not literally... the slogan suggests that Hispanics are going to be the new power base in America....nothing to do with color of skin really....which would seem more offensive to anglos...

The new historical revisions that will be coming to a school near you. Where are the American Indians denouncing this crap. I have only a fraction of American Indian in me and it pisses me off these "hispanics' think they were in North America first.

I'm a fair skinned Latino and I could easily pass for white, but I would never betray my racial heritage. Latinos, of all skin hues, are proud of who we are, and we want to be accepted as we are.

Proof these people are more racist than anyone. Should white people feel they shouldn't betray their race. White Supremecists call those people race traitors. This Latino would never be a race traitor is what he is saying.

Think of all those Nazis who moved to Argentina. Did they become Latinos? Brown people? What an existential conundrum.
