Texas Drought-Free After a Dry Decade

Thursday July 26, 2007 9:01 PM

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - For the first time in at least a decade, Texas was declared drought-free Thursday.

``We've gotten so much rain this year, we've pretty much made up for the past few years' drought conditions in several areas of the state,'' said John Nielsen-Gammon, the state's climatologist and a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University.

Only isolated areas in the northern Panhandle, far West Texas and along the eastern margins of the state are below normal when it comes to rainfall, and they're aren't so dry to be considered in still in a drought, he said.

There's been so much rain, in fact, that flooding has become a problem in some areas, and many farmers are struggling to salvage crops that remain under water, Nielsen-Gammon said. At least 16 deaths have been blamed on heavy rain since mid-June, and property damage has been widespread.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, connected with the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, shows severe or extreme drought conditions in parts of the Southeast and much of the West, but Texas and most of the nation's mid-section is drought-free.

I wonder if they were citing the drought as proof of global warming.

It’s amazing to see just how green Texas is right now in satellite photos that show vegitation growth.

The Guardian is worried about Texas weather right now?

Silly, anything is proof of global warming. That is how the game is played. Ergo, all this rain that Texas is getting isn’t a sign of good things, but bad, unless there is a drought in which case there is surely global warming. Get it, its simple.

After living through “droughts” in CA and NM that seemed to last longer than “normal” years, I’ve decided that drought-like conditions are normal, and lots of rain is not.

So instead of “drought” and “normal” rainfall, let’s be realistic.

It ought to be “normal” (previously “drought”) and “wet” (previously “normal”).

I think a philosophic approach like this will lead to more realistic assessment and planning when it comes to fresh water in the West.

That’s because Bush is having Rove use that hurricane-steering device to bring rains to TX.

Remember, the Libs’ code words now are “climate change.” ANY kind of change in climate is seen by them as evidence of man putting too much CO2 into the air.

good thing too with the price of a bale of hay as high as 9.75 this year. Now my horses just have to wade out to the pasture.

I can probably even quantify it... The drought was proof of global warming because it stayed so hot and dry. The heavy rainfall is proof of global warming because all the ice caps are melting, increasing the water in the air available for rain. The fact my pen ran out of ink during a meeting is proof of global warming, the ink should’ve lasted longer. And if you can’t see the link between melting ice cream and global warming...well...I don’t know what to tell you.

Droughts suck, but correcting them in a month or so isn’t much fun either.

I wonder if they were citing the drought as proof of global warming.

Even if they were, they'll soon be siting the unusually wet and cool summer so far as the new proof of globull warming.

And we’re also getting a break from the normal 100 plus degree temperatures.

It’s been a reasonably cool but humid summer.

You can say that again, LOL! Hubby has had a hard time keeping up with mowing our place(1.5 acres), as soon as he finishes it, it needs mowing again. We also had a small cucumber in the garden that grew to 1 foot long and 3 inches in diameter in just a few days. I was worried it wouldn’t be any good, but it was delicious.

Hahah, well I live in the Temperate Rainforest (no I’m not exagerating it really is a temperate rainforest) of Western Pa, and I just have to laugh when I hear water conservation hoo ha around these parts..... You can’t walk 1/4 mile in any direction around these parts without hitting running water of some sort or another.

There are parts of this world where water is hard to come by... here certainly ain’t it.

ping!

How’s the cotton crop going around Swinney Switch and points south? Everything looked real nice a couple of weeks ago but it’s been raining ever since. Last year nobody made a crop. This year too much rain.
