Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the House of Representatives, recently said that 9/11 is almost like “the Reichstag fire. After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the communists for it, and it put the leader of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted.”
The country Ellison refers to is Germany under the Nazis, and the leader — and whom he is clearly comparing to George W. Bush — is, of course, Adolf Hitler. His statement is a result of either one of two things: mind-boggling historical ignorance or a loathing for Bush beggaring description. I think it is both.
Let us review. The Holocaust resulted in the death of more than 6 million Jews and this “Final Solution” surpasses in wonton cruelty and sheer scope all other horrors of human history. Indeed, the activities of men made infamous by their ruthlessness or barbarity — such as Osama bin Laden, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Attila the Hun, Joseph Stalin, Genghis Kahn and Vlad the Impaler — shrink, if not into near triviality, at least into a less horrific rank when one considers that slaughter in Nazi Germany became a science. This premeditated, highly-organized, and well-oiled death machine propels the ghastly nightmare of Nazi Germany into a terrifying class by itself.
This is not to lessen the horrors suffered by Iraqis under Saddam, to dismiss the greater number of deaths under Stalin, or to make light of the Sept. 11 attacks. Rather, it is to explain that Hitler alone deserves the “distinction” of being the standard against which all other monsters are measured.
It is therefore not only inappropriate but utterly preposterous to compare Bush to Hitler. But this is how things are in America today. Bush is likened to the German leader while the true monsters we are fighting that actually warrant measurement against Hitler — Osama bin Laden and his followers — are instead called insurgents, freedom fighters or jihadists. Many of us don’t even call them terrorists any more!
When I think of liberals I certainly do not think of Hitler. Even considering the fact that abortion is the closest thing I can think of to an American holocaust (where babies are not considered fully human just as the Nazis did not believe Jews were fully human), I still will not classify them as Hitler-like. I simply do not frame the Left in that way or that language.
I remember nearly a decade ago when you criticized the Government and or the President, you were labeled an “Anti-Government Extremist”. Now your a Patriot exercising your Constitutional duty to decent. My what a difference 10 years makes.
One thing I’ve noticed.
As time has passed, And the Democrats failure to “get” President Bush has become more pronounced, the leftist rhetoric is getting harsher and harsher.

Incorrect. There have been at least two communist dictators who have murdered far more than 6 million, i.e. Mao and Stalin. Stalin murdered AT LEAST 20 million and Mao murdered untold tens of millions.
I’ve found the Hitler comparisions very helpful. The moment I hear anyone make that comparision to Bush I know I’m dealing with a poorly educated, emotionally unstable, shallow, hate filled leftwingnut.
Gives me the opportunity to either ‘play’ with them, or to walk away.

I have an associate who thinks the Bush administration is the worst regime since Hilter. He’s an atheist by the way, and I feel the hostility is based on his hatred of Christians.

Again, according to Guiness, Pol Pot wins the prize for engineering the worst per capita genocide. In Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge: “More than one third of the eight million Khmers were killed between April 17, 1975 and January 1979.” It seems to me that the question really should be, “Why do Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot get a pass?” because the one most frequently referenced by the Left as the epitome of evil is Hitler, not any of them. The answer of course is that the Left rarely criticize or even acknowledge the death toll caused by their fellow travelers.

He [the author] will, once the left has unrestrained power. The checks and balances designed 250 years ago are the only thing limiting his rhetoric today--the left doesn't seem too Hitler-like because it is not allowed to give into it's worst urges. But, once the left has unrestrained power, he won't be able to say it either. One if the left's darkest urges is to kill or imprison anyone who disagrees with them in public or even those who have secret, "incorrect" thoughts (the genesis of the term "politically incorrect).
So he might as well call them Nazi's now, while he can.
My other quibble with the article is its rating of Hitler vs the other secular humanist monsters of the 20th century.
Granted, the Nazi's were especially creepy in their quiet efficiency. But Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were net-net more effective as mass murderers than Hitler (killed more or a much higher percentage of the target group). They just had better PR machines than did the Nazis (Lincoln Jeffers, Alger Hiss, Harry Hopkins, Henry Wallace, Noam Chomsky and much of the western press). These co-criminals actively excused or ignored their crimes.

Unfortunately, we'll probably never know the full extent of Mao's crimes, while the excesses of the Stalin-era Soviet Union are well-documented by Solzhenitsyn and others. I guess the ChiComs were much more successful in silencing their critics.

Further to your point, there was the experimentation done on Chinese prisoners by the Japanese unit 741. That unit made Joseph Mengele’s experiments look humane by comparison.
