Huckabee calls on Tancredo to pull campaign ad

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Thursday, July 26, called on rival Tom Tancredo to stop airing a "blatantly dishonest" campaign ad in Iowa that accuses Huckabee of favoring amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Huckabee said Tancredo either did sloppy research or purposefully mischaracterized his position.

"When people engage in a completely false attack, it's usually an act of desperation. To me, it's a badge of honor because he sees that we are reaching the people we are trying to reach," Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, said.

Tancredo campaign spokeswoman Bay Buchanan said the ad would not be pulled and insisted it was accurate. She said Huckabee supported a plan by Bush that would have allowed illegal immigrants to earn the right to stay in the United States, and that Huckabee refused to sign a pledge opposing amnesty.

"All indications are that Huckabee supports amnesty. He's a pro-amnesty politician who is in denial. There are a lot of pro-amnesty politicians in denial," she said.

The radio ad calls Mitt Romney a flip-flopper on abortion, amnesty and gun control, then attacks Sam Brownback, Fred Thompson and Huckabee, claiming "they're all for amnesty."

Huckabee said his first priority is to make the U.S. border secure, then require illegal immigrants to pay restitution for breaking the law.

Huckabee's campaign manager Chip Saltsman said that the ad "clearly distorts Mike Huckabee's conservative record on amnesty" and should be pulled.

He sure did. Just like Bush, he feels so righteous on the topic that he thinks the law doesn’t apply to him.

require illegal immigrants to pay restitution for breaking the law

There is no dollar amount acceptable in my book. If his plan does not include sending them home then it's amnesty.

Candidates with minuscule poll numbers mud-wrestling with each other to attempt to gain traction. Highly amusing!

“Pay restitution” for criminals is AMNESTY....which was defeated TWICE already. Anything short of deportation (current law) is not enforcing the law.

Thanks for confirming you are on the PRO-AMNESTY side of the debate, Huck!

Why waste money on Huckabee in the first place?

Bay Buchanan would never have let that ad go out if it was not true. I like Huck, but he did this to himself.

Every word in this statement is true. Multi-faced Mitt (the word two-faced seems inadequate in his case), Brokeback, and Huckabee are all for amnesty.

Sounds like he supports amnesty to me.

This add, if it states that Huckabee is in favor of amnesty, is 100% true. For Huckabee to deny it is a huge fraud. Huckabee has said many times that he is FOR amnesty. There are not many pro-illegals politicians out there in any party. Huckabee even resorted to calling other candidates and politicians "back home" some pretty nasty names because of efforts to cut off non-essential government services to illegals (free tuition, welfare benefits, etc.).

Huckabee - what happened to your Preacher/Pastoral days? Did you forget your commitment to God to be an honest man? I don't think that commitment has been terminated by God.

Does anyone have a link to the ad?

Nice to see Tancredo on the attack...calling out the pro-illegal candidates.

Sorry, Huckabee, but your record is pro-illegal.

The GOP cannot win the White House if they run a pro-illegal candidate.

Better known as the McCain Kennedy Amnesty plan
