Since he is from the area and well liked there, I think Tommy could also put Iowa (which went to Bush by a razor thin margin in 2004 and went to Gore in 2000) and Minnesota (which is often decided by less than 1%) in the GOP column. That totals 27 electoral votes -- with Wisconsin and Minnesota equaling Ohio's 10.
I do not think Frudy McRomneyson would play well in the great lakes and we'd lose those states to a ticket like Hillary/Richardson. Especially dangerous is the idiot freepers who seem to want to guarantee a Dem victory by saying "SCREW the rest of the country, we DON'T need 'em! Bush proves you can with ONLY the south and west!" Great strategy, assume the ticket can get every single southern and western state so we eek by the minimum 270 electoral votes. I hope these guys didn't use that strategy to pass college.
“When I announced Tommy had WON 1st place in Iowa’s second largest county, and concluded the post with “On to Ames!”, legions of freepers came out to mock the results “
This Freeper never did. While I’m undecided so far, I think that Governor Thompson has a good record to run on, even though he’s made some mistakes.
As for the Ames straw poll, have a nice trip. Perhaps you can take some pics and post them.
Alot of the Hunters fans are wondering why there guy is failing to register with voters and not even measure as a blip on the radar screen. I think it's because most of the targeted voters who agree with Hunter 100% are graviting towards Tancredo instead. Tancredo has been much more high profile in Washington and I heard of him long before I was aware of what Duncan Hunter stood for (though I agree with them equally)
I think Tancredo finshes 3rd or 4th in Iowa but Hunter ends up no higher than 6th.
Al Fred won. He's our next president. Ain't no question.
Interesting. I thought you were a Fredhead like FieldMarshaldj. (How Fredheads can get so worked up about "treasonous" Lindsey Graham siding with McCain in the Senate, yet respond with a "nobody's perfect" shrug when Fred did the exact same thing, I'll never know.) I know you've been floating the prospect of Tommy for veep, which I appreciate even though I don't think he'd take it.
Freeper Phil Collins and I got our tickets to Ames via FairTax and will be attending to work the electorate towards Tommy. I never thought about doing a thread on FR about it with photos, but that's a cool idea. Maybe I should also start a variety thread in a week seeing if other freepers around the country are coming to Ames? We could have a freeper meetup and take pics.
I knew it. I’m the one that predicted Tommy Thompson will win the straw poll.
On Thompson’s web page, I see he’s going to participate in that ridiculous YouTube debate. Bad move.
Freepers have fallen into the MSM trap of proclaiming the only "real" candidates are Frudy McRomneyson, so all day long we have to hear them yap endlessly about Fred vs. Rudy vs. Mitt.
It would be great to see if the Iowa straw poll came back with something like #1 TOMMY, #2 Tancredo, #3 Paul, as it would send FR into meltdown and they'd on here furious trying to spin the results and claim the poll was rigged or doesn't reflect Iowa voters, etc.
I have no doubt if these freepers were around in 1940 they would have told us the unknown Wendell Wilkie has zero chance of getting the GOP nomination, and in 1975 they would have been insisting there is not one Jimmy Carter supporter in the entire Democrat Party.
1940 REPUBLICAN NOMINATION
Before the 1940 Republican primaries, the three “main” candidates for the nomination were considered to be Senators Robert Taft of Ohio and Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan and Thomas E. Dewey, the “gangbusting” District Attorney from Manhattan. All three men had campaigned vigorously during the primary season, but only 300 of the 1,000 convention delegates had been pledged to a candidate. An unknown dark horse was Wendell Willkie. As a Wall Street-based industrialist Willkie, who had never before run for public office, seemed an unlikely candidate. Indeed he had been a Roosevelt delegate at the 1932 Democratic National Convention. The May 8 Gallup poll showed Dewey at 67% support among Republicans, followed closely by Vandenberg and Taft, with Willkie far behind at a mere 3%.
1976 DEMOCRAT NOMINATION
Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson had raised his national profile by speaking out on Soviet-American relations and Middle East policy regularly, and was considered a front-runner for the nomination when he announced the start of his campaign in February 1975. Also considered frontrunners were Congressman Morris “Mo” Udall, as a liberal alternative to the Southern centrist candidates. (Udall was nationall known and looked set to win the Iowa primary and as the returns ticked in, it looked like he would win it. Udall was prematurely projected the winner, exclaiming “Oh, how sweet it is”.), former two-time Presidential nominee George Wallace, and legendary Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas (In 1975 and in the early part of that year he had already raised over $1 million for his campaign; behind only George Wallace of Alabama and Henry M. ‘Scoop’ Jackson of Washington). Way down on the list was dark horse candidate Jimmy Carter. When Carter entered the Democratic Party presidential primaries in 1976, he was considered to have little chance against nationally better-known politicians. He was polling only about 2%.
;-)
“He is apparantly well known there.”
He’s spent a mere $200K in Iowa. He has a staff of 8. He’s shook every Iowan’s hand 3x at least, LOL! I believe Romney has spent in the millions in Iowa.
If it’s one thing Tommy knows how to do, it’s how to run a campaign on the cheap. I have a few arguments with the man, but it would be nice to see him gain a little traction.
Tommy was on local radio the other day. He thinks he’ll finish first or second in Iowa. I wouldn’t put it past him. :)
Uht-Oh! Someone’s fearful of Tommy! The “Cr@pitol Slimes” (leftist rag) is smearing him with the help of the wire services. They must’ve just read FR as this was article was posted less than an hour ago, LOL!
Former Thompson Aide Kept Health Report From Public
Capital Times news services 7/29/2007 4:04 pm
A surgeon general’s report in 2006 that called on Americans to help tackle global health problems has been kept from the public by a Bush political appointee, and former Gov. Tommy Thompson hire, without any background or expertise in medicine or public health, chiefly because the report did not promote the administration’s policy accomplishments, according to current and former public health officials.
The report described the link between poverty and poor health, urged the U.S. government to help combat widespread diseases as a key aim of its foreign policy, and called on corporations to help improve health conditions in the countries where they operate. A copy of the report was obtained by The Washington (Com)Post.

Actually, it’s just that sour grapes X-surgeon general Carmona pimping his plight yet again.
How conveeenient! :)
actually Ron Paul, without being listed, did get the same zero votes as Hunter.
Unfortunately for Ed Failor, Rep. Paul will be on the official straw poll on Aug 11
Yes, congratulations to Tommy Thompson and his supporters from a Fred Thompson supporter. Well done!
We'll take him back and you can have Je$$e Jack$on back.
“On Thompsons web page, I see hes going to participate in that ridiculous YouTube debate. Bad move.”
Sorry to hear that as I also think it is a bad move! Especially if it is anything like the last YouTube CNN debate!
