Thompson wins big in Iowa straw poll

Crawford County GOP: County Fair Presidential Straw Poll Results
7/27/2007

Crawford County Republicans held a Totally Unscientific/Just for Fun GOP 2008 Presidential Straw Poll at their Crawford County Republican Fair Booth July 19-22, 2007. Ten names were listed on the ballot, including one yet undeclared GOP presidential candidate. Results over the four days were as follows:

34 Tommy Thompson, Wisconsin
25 Mitt Romney, Massachusetts
17 Fred Thompson, Tennessee
15 Rudy Giuliani, New York
10 Tom Tancredo, Colorado
9 John McCain, Arizona
3 Sam Brownback, Kansas
1 John Cox, Illinois
1 Mike Huckabee, Arkansas
0 Duncan Hunter, California

The Official Republican Party of Iowa Straw Poll will be held Saturday, August 11, 2007 in Ames, Iowa. With the addition of Ron Paul, Texas, the aforementioned names will be on the official ballot. Iowan voters (age 18 by Election Day 2008) showing a photo ID will be eligible to participate. Voting will start promptly at 10 AM and conclude at 6 PM. Results will be announced at 7 PM in Hilton Coliseum.

Laura Ingraham, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host and author will be the Master of Ceremonies for the day's program including eight declared presidential candidates.

Entertainment and food on the ISU Campus hosted by candidates and special interest groups add to the fun of the Iowa Republican Straw Poll.

Persons interested in attending this event may find out details and how to obtain tickets to this event by contacting Crawford County Republican Finance Chair Gwen Ecklund at 712.269.2250 or visiting www.iowagop.net/straw.poll .

Regrettably, my own preferred candidate (Congressman Ron Paul) was not listed in this particular straw poll. Had he been available as an option, I feel confident that we would have at least matched the support registered by Congressman Hunter. ;-)

Congratulations to you Thompson supporters. Your boy seems to be doing well in Iowa.

(However, after his enormously successful showing at the Iowans for Tax Relief candidates' forum, I still have high hopes for my guy as well).

Though a support of Mr. Hunter, I do think Mr. (Tommy) Thompson will do well in Iowa. He is apparantly well known there.

I like Tommy. He seems decent, honest, solidly conservative. I don't know that he has the cash on hand to stay in the race for long (something about which I'm not worried with my guy), but he's my favorite Thompson in the race.

It's good that Hunter is finally doing something with Meet-Up.com. A little late in the ballgame, but it's a wise move on his part. In the Ron Paul campaign, we've found that it's wonderful leverage for a shoe-string budget -- something Hunter needs even more than we do.

If either Fred or Tommy win the primary, and pick the other Thompson, it will be Thompson/Thompson ticket. It’s not without merit. Tommy probably can carry Wisconsin (substitute for OH, which may flip to Dims), while the other Thompson can carry the South. If that’s the case, the Dims will use characters from Tin Tin comics to smear them (the movie may come out next year, BTW).

On to the Fiddler’s Notch, New Hampshire maple syrup boil and straw poll!! I feel confident that Tommy Thompson can garner at least 20 out of the 33 votes there if he promises price supports for American syrup tappers!!

Wisconisn's 10 Electoral Votes can hardly substitute for Ohio's 20, but Tommy Thompson is probably the only Republican candidate who could carry Wisconsin. Even so, losing Ohio would make it tough.

As for the South -- sure, Fred Thompson could carry the South, but then again, so could every other GOP candidate except possibly Giuliani (who could still win most of the South -- maybe). Fred adds nothing to the Electoral calculus there, because our problem ain't in the South to begin with.

(this is not to deny that Fred may have some pull elsewhere, I'm just pointing out that he doesn't provide any unique advantage in the South)

I'm sure it will be a hard-fought contest. ;-)

Mmmmm, lemme see here.

The actor dude who gets a lotta press for being coy and not saying he is running for anything gets 17%.

But Mr. Tancredo of Colorado, who is routinely bashed here on FR and in the press everywhere for being an eeevil anti-immigrationist, does better than drama queen and darling of the East Coast cocktail circuit John McCain (former fearless front runner, self declared heir to the throne).

What's that tellya, folks?

Mr. Tancredo is my second choice.

A fellow Presbyterian who has voted with Ron Paul on most issues other than Iraq (and even Tancredo thinks we should begin withdrawing our troops if the Iraqi Government doesn't step up to the plate and show some definite, positive progress), Tancredo is:

On most every issue, Tancredo is second only to Ron Paul -- and so, he's my second choice.

Duncan Hunter and Tommy Thompson also seem like solid, trustworthy Conservatives; but I don't know how they're going to establish any "staying power" when they're only fund-raising a few hundred thousand each, while Paul and Tancredo are raising a few million each.

Time will tell!

Great post...

What it means is that Tancredo is doing better than what the liberal media, pro-illegal GOPers, some talk-show hosts, etc....than what is believed.

If the GOP does not take the illegal alien/border security issue more seriously (ie...dumping the pro-illegal agenda of Bush/McCain)...they will lose big in Nov 08. It is the issue that will keep conservatives away from the polls on election day if the GOP selects a pro-illegal candidate

I saw that article. I always enjoy reading Dr. North, even when I disagree with him (we have some eschatological differences. Que sera sera).

As I said, this particular Straw Poll did not include Ron Paul. The Paul-bashers are not going to enjoy that luxury when the official Iowa Straw Poll is held in Ames.

Paul/Tancredo.

Would be an interesting line-up. Thought about it many times.

And I'm torn because a Tancredo / Hunter ticket appeals to me too.

But Tom did terrible in a couple of those debate-a-thons; he gets too emotional and academic, such a sincere guy.

You can't be like that in a sound bite world.

Your analysis is also correct. Tancredo is not a one issue candidate, either; he's a solid Conservative for real....unlike the posers on the so-called A list.

But Tanc gets votes in Iowa because of his main issue, and it shows how important that really is. Could Paul/Tancredo bring enough Republicans and conservative Independents together to defeat the Stalinist hate slate of Clinton-Obama?

I don't know, but I would suspect that there are far more people in America who would vote "anyone but that frigid witch" than people might think.

And a Republican slate that has a clean break with the seditionist wing of the party would carry only none of that wing's baggage going into an election.

But don't worry. The Establishment dude will win, and be shocked when the Broken Glass folks stay home, and figure that the country's dead anyway, might as well let it commit suicide once and for all with The Bitch and The Third World Alien in control of Western Civilization.

Wow, these numbers are WAY out of whack...

Tommy Thompson comes out the winner? Wow. And Tom Tancredo, the guy who’s my second choice, finishes a strong 4th?

Yet Hunter failed to get a single vote? Hmm...

TOMMY Thompson for POTUS ping!

Welcome to the Official Tommy Thompson ping list! -- The ONLY candidate for President elected statewide in a swing state as a proven conservative!

Please Freepmail me if you want ON or OFF this list. Remember, despite what some freepers may think, Tommy Thompson is the ONLY Thompson out there actually RUNNING for President.

Tommy Thompson: The Reliable Conservative

Tommy Thompson wins Iowa's 2nd Largest County!

================================================

When I announced Tommy had WON 1st place in Iowa's second largest county, and concluded the post with "On to Ames!", legions of freepers came out to mock the results and claim all those TT supporters "meant" to vote for Fred (just as Gore supporters claimed his voters couldn't follow an arrow, Fred supporters would have us believe his base can't remember their candidate's first name). Had to faulty. No WAY does Tommy have ANY support in the "real" polls.

We'll see if the Fredheads are still laughing about the "On to Ames" remark on August 11th. I have little doubt the Fredheads will be working overtime to claim all those Tommy voters really "meant" to vote for Fred. They just can't fathom that once Iowa voters actually get to know the candidates, someone could consciously choose to select the Thompson who has executive experience, WINs in a swing state, and is far stronger on conservative issues than the Hollywood guy.

I will personally be in Ames on August 11th. Fasten your seatbelts, this is gonna be a bumpy ride.
