Mitt unplugged
Politico ^ | August 04, 2007 | Jonathan Martin

Mitt Romney engaged in a heated discussion about his Mormon faith with a prominent Des Moines talk show host off the air on Thursday morning. The contentious back-and-forth between Romney and WHO's Jan Mickelson began on the air (video link courtesy Breitbart.tv) when the former governor appeared on the popular program that has become a regular stop for GOP presidential hopefuls. But the conversation spilled over to a commercial break and went on after the program ended, where a visibly annoyed Romney spoke in much greater detail about his church's doctrines than he is comfortable doing so in public.

The footage was captured by the station's in-studio camera and posted on its website. But Romney, who is careful to portray a sunny and upbeat public image, clearly did not know he was being recorded. The candidate reveals a private side that is at turns cutting, combative and sarcastic, but most of all agitated at being forced to defend what he and his church stand for.

And by the way, claiming an argument is a strawman argument is not the same as SHOWING it to be so. I remain unimpressed, you present no proof, just innuendo.

Very well.

The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. This sort of "reasoning" has the following pattern:

Person A has position X. [Religious attacks have no place in this News/Activism forum]
Person B presents position Y (which is a distorted version of X). [FC: "Truthfully, I think everyone who believes religion has NO place in politics should be banned, don’t you?"]
Person B attacks position Y [ FC: "Wouldn’t that be a de facto way of turning Free Republic into an atheist site?"].
Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed. [FC: "Or is that what you want?"]

>>>But rewriting the Bible to include thousands of words not in the Hebrew is okay to a cult such as Mormonism. <<

Catholics have long held icons and relics of the saints to be holy. They have local saints. Patron saints of nations. Those who have followed Christ through time. Those who have been visionaries and carried messages from God. Their messages have been read by many who pray for their intercession.

Do you really think God gave up after the Council of Nicea?

Dare I say that your cult that stresses that divine revelation ends with the Bible is nonsense? I’m not even a Catholic, but I think their beliefs are vastly superior to those put forth by my own church in that arena.

Get over yourself and your holier-than-thou rubbish. A Catholic could just as easily attack your beliefs as being inferior, and an Orthodox Christian easily could dismiss your beliefs as a Johnny-Come-Lately half-breed.

They tend not to do that as of late. Lucky you.

An Evangelical Presbyterian.

The above is a sample of the kind of 18th century jibber-jabber that the LDS church is derived from. You be the judge.

“Get over yourself and your holier-than-thou rubbish.” I see, so opposing the fabricated rewrite of the Bible, by a proven liar, adulterer, and false teacher makes one rubbish in your earthly eyes. Thank you. I have not been paid so great a compliment before! There is none holier than Jesus. And Joe Smith wanted eyes on him and his fabrication. You accuse me of a holier-than-thou attitude for opposing heresy. Oh, wait! Yes, please do accuse, and in so doing identify yourself, physician. Jesus heals, satan destroys by disease of spirit. And your studies are for what purpose again?

Please help me with this; if you believe in Christ and the holy spirit, why do you need silk under-garments to protect you?

I am not being a bigot as some MittBotts claim. It is a legitimate question.

As I started this thread, answer the question.

I was at one time a Mason. So was Smith. Understand Free Masonary and you understand many principles of LDS. I lived with Mormans for 21 yrs. Great people of the community, family values, great citizens of our country.

Why the MittBots get scunched up is beyond me. Sorta like CAIR.

Be open and disclose. It is a fair question.

Rudy won’t be talking about Catholicism anytime soon. He’s excommunicated himself on two counts. He refuses to answer any questions on his personal practice although I’m sure he doesn’t bother attending anymore. At least he knows he’s done wrong.

The false prophet's name was JOSEPH Smith, not John. The letter was a forgery so it is not the jibber jabber you sought to post as evidence. Give the site of LDS scriptures a read, and note the rewritten Bible (called the Joseph Smith Translation) the LDS have as 'better translation'. That is a real piece of evidence for their accusation that the Bible is the Word of God so far as it is accurately translated ... as if Joe adding more than 800 words to Genesis chapter 50 is 'a better translation'. When opposing heresies it is important to be accurate.

And others in places like the northeast or CA simply will not vote for a Southerner like Fred.

That's true. California will go to Rudy, Mitt or *shudder* HILLARY.

Tis true.

Mormons not Mormans

You can call yourself what you want. You are not deserving of the gift of salvation through Christ. And neither am I. And neither are Mormons. But Christ did indeed say, “Whosoever should believeth in me.”

I frankly don’t see any Mormons denying Christ. It is, indeed, the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.

But you, in your fringe faith that sees itself superior to that of others despite not popping up for at least 1400 years after the life of Christ, feel it within yourself to tear down another brother in Christ.

You may not buy into the message in the Book of Mormon, and honestly, I don’t, either. But that said, I’m fairly confident that Christ and God are far less concerned with hersey and far more concerned with the love and worship of the human soul through faith in Christ. Mormons read the Christian Bible just the same as you and I. And Catholics read the Apocrypha, which I’m guessing you don’t.

“Mormonism isn’t a nothing. But it’s not as big a something as you would have us to believe.”

Believe as you wish - I’d have it no other way.

However, I am telling you that evangelicals - the religious
right - will end up a split group over mormonism. Lose
5-10% who refuse to choose between two evils, and you lose
the election.

Faustian choice, Faustian result.

“If you’re going to list the petty voters who decide based on what they don’t like (lesser of two evils), then list more of them, not just the ones that favor your own prejudice.”

I do not know others issues enough to predict or fully
understand them. I’ll stick with what I know. You can imagine
what others may or may not think.

Nominating a mormon is one of the few ways republicans
could lose against hillary. No doubt they will manage more.

Even Clinton I was elected without a majority of voters.
Surely, hillary has that in mind and strategy. Since her
negatives are as high as the public feelings about mormons,
it would be a battle.

; I haven't any stones to throw. My beliefs are sourced in the Bible, in the Savior; I'm not of any denomination currently. I will, however, thank you for humbling me. It never hurts to be spoken to, only spoken ill of unjustly.
