Phelps Family to Protest Two Funerals of MN Bridge Collapse Victims

Posted on 08/07/2007 1:37:31 AM PDT by Brynn2007

The Westboro Baptist Church has announced that they will be protesting the funerals of two victims of the 35W Bridge Collapse.

They will be protesting the funeral of Paul Eickstadt at 10:45 AM on Tuesday, August 7th at Grace Evangelical Free Church at 755 73rd Ave. in Minneapolis.

They will also be protesting the funeral of Sherry Lou Engebretsen at 10:45 AM on Wednesday, August 8th at Incarnation Lutheran Church at 4880 North Hodgson Rd. in Shoreview, MN.

Links to copy and paste to your URL....

These two are just opinions on why the bridge collapsed. 1. http://www.godhatesfags.com/writings/20070804_americas-highways-lay-waste.pdf 2. http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/aug2007/20070802_minneapolis-bridge-collapse.pdf

This is a link to a list of links which lead to fliers for individual upcoming protesting events, the two MN victims included. http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/pickets.html

The following are the fliers for the individual funerals of Paul and Sherry, respectively.

http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/aug2007/20070806_paul-eickstadt-funeral.pdf

http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/aug2007/20070806_sherry-lou-engebretsen-funeral.pdf

I will be attending the protest of Mrs. Engebretsen's funeral to do as much to hinder their antics as I can...my only hope is that there will be a huge outpouring of support for these families.

My first thought was that it would be a bad idea to give hese people publicity...but to not protect the dignity of these families because of the risk of publicity for the WBC's cause would be a much greater injustice than if these families were given respect and the Phelps' just got more people to hate them through publicity in the process.

Please help if you are able! Thank you all.

The only reason these people are still alive is because it’s against the law to kill them.

It’d be a darn crying shame if say, they were driving to one of their protests, and the bridge they were on collapsed.

Phelps is being sued by a man from my town and I believe the trial date is this fall.

I’m hoping that this suit will lift the financial mask from the Phelps organization.

My view is that they are a left-liberal front group designed to discredit “the religious right.”

That's probably correct. Kind of funny how the Gay Rights people *never* go after them,. whereas the slightest perceived manifestation of 'homophobia' in anyone else is pounced on. They get a lot of money from *somewhere*. They *never* picket actual homosexual events. Their every appearance seems calculated to generate the most media coverage possible. And Phelps is known to have had some involvement with the Gores.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Would it be bad if I wished a tragic death on one of their own family members? Would they protest their own funeral?

Are you kidding me? Gay rights groups have been fighting this organization since they tried to erect a statue “in honor” of Mathew Shepard. They had/have counters stating how many days in hell Diane Whipple and Mathew Shepard have endured. Call it for what it is, a fundie religious group. The Phelps family is in no way stupid or poor. There are indeed times when ‘the law of the west’ was superior to our own. There are some things people shouldn’t be able to get away with, and what this group has been doing fall under that category.

If these sub-humans showed up at the funeral of my father I’d be hard pressed not to f-— some people up seriously.

I’m thinking most witnesses would swear I was in another state at the time.

Doing some digging now- looks like I might have been incorrect about that. I hadn’t heard of any major lawsuits or anything against them- but then, these people usually aren’t on my radar anyway- they aren’t worth the effort.

If that were only true. They are a fringe Baptist group, very sincere in their beliefs and who revel in their hatred. Their attacks are entirely non-partisan.

No, this group protests at any funeral of note to protest against homosexuality. If they stuck to protesting funerals of gay men and women their wouldn't be as much opposition to them.

A useful reference to the background information on this group. True, wiki commentary itself is frequently a “non-reliable source”, but there are lots of links to check other sources and the claims in the wiki text.

I'd tend to agree except Phelps does not represent the religious right any more than Jim Jones represented communal left leaning religion. The Phelps are a crime family using "religion" as a cover.

I emailed the MN captain of the Patriot Guard and he said that this is kind of outside the scope of what they do, which I thought might be the case. At any rate, they only become involved when the family invites them there as guests.

I absolutely agree. I would be a hypocrite were I to say that God isn’t just as disappointed in me for the things I do wrong on a daily basis - sin is sin. But since we know the truth, we absolutely should pray for them to know it too...they make Christianity into an exclusive club...when really we know that its all-inclusive. We need to show them the REAL love of Christ....

but let’s not forget that even Jesus showed anger at the injustice and blasphemy going on in the temple.

“My view is that they are a left-liberal front group designed to discredit ‘the religious right.’”

I sure don’t know one way or the other. But I remember seeing some TV report about the group, including interviews with a couple of female members. I came away with the distinct impression that they did not really believe what they said, that their true motives were hidden. Maybe it was just that I could not identify, even to the slighest degree, with anything they said. It seemed phony.

In a simpler time before the ACLU and litigation over everything these people wouldn’t make it to the actual funeral, they’d be found groaning by the side of the road holding their midsection. Clear case of slip and fall.

No, I've met them. They seem unable to form complete sentences if you try to talk to them - they yell the same worn phrases over and over. It is impossible to carry on a conversation with them... because they don't talk - they just mechanically repeat the same things over and over. They shadowed the elderly at the church they protested at here, screaming at the old and frail, but oddly without any energy behind their words. It was disturbing.

Make of that what you will, but they are not fakes or plants.

I parked my car near the Grace Evangelical Church on 73rd Ave NE today (August 7th) at around 9am until 12:30pm. Other than 2 friendly police officers directing traffic, a Faux News van, and a couple of video cameras, it was very quiet. Thankfully, not a single Phelps in sight.

It’s a good thing too... I hadn’t really thought out my plan any further than — “grab their signs while they’re unloading the van and RUN!”

I sort of doubt (hope!) they even made it to Minnesota today. Hopefully they won’t be at the Shoreview funeral either, but in case they do show up, it makes sense to let the church and the police know:

IIRC, Shelley Phelps-Roper, their usual spokeswitch, says their purpose is not to convert bystanders to believe/practice as they do.

Nope. They just wanna make sure we know the Lord’s peeved and sending all but themselves to hell. That’s all. End message. LOL!
