Fred Thompson on the Move
Yahoo! News ^ | August 8, 2007 | Marie Horrigan

With a re-vamped Web site, a new “Weekly Update” e-mail to supporters, and the announcement of top campaign hires, the still-unofficial presidential campaign of actor and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson edges ever closer to officialdom this week.

As part of the flurry of activity, Thompson informed supporters he was taking the month of August to travel around the country and speak with voters. “It’s not quite two-a-days, but I think we’re building some real momentum. To keep that momentum, we’re shifting into higher gear,” Thompson wrote in his inaugural e-mail update, released Tuesday,

On Wednesday, the campaign announced that Bill Lacy, a former Reagan White House political aide, had joined as chairman of “Friends of Fred Thompson.” Lacey worked on the presidential campaigns of Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, and also worked on Thompson’s 2004 Senate run.

“As I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level,” Thompson said in a statement.

The campaign also named Randy Enwright national political director of the “testing the waters” campaign. Enwright, a Florida native, has served as executive director for the state GOP in Florida and Iowa and served as political director of the Missouri Republican Party, in addition to work on campaigns for all three Bushs — presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, as well as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Linda Rozett, a spokeswoman for Friends of Fred Thompson, wouldn’t give a date for an announcement, but many observers expect Thompson to make his run official in early September.

“It all depends on your expectations.. hell, even the most Conservative, Duncan Hunter, if put under the same microscope as Thompson, would be called a RINO by some.. “

When it comes to taken a consistent sand on conservative issues across the board, Tancredo is the most conservative.
Hunter is less conservative than a number of candidates on the issue of government spending. Even McCain, who is often vilified as a RINO, has a better record on limiting government spending than Hunter. I like Hunter’s personality but am a bit surprised that many consider him the most conservative in the race. Perhaps, because limiting the role of the federal government is such a cornerstone issue for me, I really do not see him as a very strong conservative.

“Fred looks like a President and maybe can ACT like a president.. but he is no NEWT..”

Thank God for that. I was more impressed by Newt until his caving on the Global Warming issue in the love-fest with Kerrey.

As I approach the big 3-0, with every passing day, I’ve come to realize that one quality stands out.

One quality in a person that defines their character, and by which all other aspects of their lives correlate.

It is humility.

Thompson has it.

Giuliani, Gingrich and all the Democrats running do not.

Humility makes the world a beautiful place.

There is one mistake in this, Fred didn’t run in 2004. I think it was ten years earlier in 1994 that Lacy helped with his campaign. Wow, a reporter doesn’t do a good job of fact checking. Who would have thought that?

Hell if I know. I only watch the History Channel and the Millitary channel.

Oh and Monk.

I think it is the first week in September when all the new season shows run on the “used to be” big 3...

I like Fred but he needs to decide.

What rational person thinks Fred hasn’t decided?

that’s interesting. follow the money! But they would only have to stop the re-runs of shows he was on and that for only a year or so... and after that, they would be gold.

Assuming, as I am, that he is President.

I just wish there were some movies with George W. Bush in them I could watch after he leaves.

It makes zero sense to announce in August. August is the dead spot of the entire year news-cycle-wise. There’s no way to predict with certainty what will happen when Thompson officially gets in the race, but so far he’s been very smart from a PR/communications standpoint. Work out the inevitable beginning-of-a-campaign organizational kinks during a dead news cycle and then make a splash when everyone’s back from summer vacation and beginning to pay attention again. Then, we’ll see how he does (I think he’ll do well).

I would be happy to send funds to his campaign, but not until he announces.

Perfectly reasonable.

I know what you mean....I feel that all of this could just be another planned attack on Rudy or even Mitt....

I am just jaded....

Fred had better not do a Perot on us.....acting all presidential all the while knowing that his only job is to derail another candidate...

those of you who know Fred had better get him to move very, very soon and very, very strongly...

I want no more of weak Pubs such as Bush.....or Dole...

Actually, it has been warming and cooling for hundreds of millions of years. The debate is how much of the current warming is caused my human activity and can we prevent it. There is no scientific evidence that this is so. I was disappointed to see Gingrich cave on this issue in the so-called “debate” with Kerrey.
