US public sees news media as biased, inaccurate, uncaring: poll

More than half of Americans say US news organizations are politically biased, inaccurate, and don't care about the people they report on, a poll published Thursday showed.

And poll respondents who use the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism, the poll conducted by the Pew Research Center said.

More than two-thirds of the Internet users said they felt that news organizations don't care about the people they report on; 59 percent said their reporting was inaccurate; and 64 percent they were politically biased.

More than half -- 53 percent -- of Internet users also faulted the news organizations for "failing to stand up for America".

Among those who get their news from newspapers and television, criticism of the news organizations was up to 20 percentage points lower than among Internet news audiences, who tend to be younger and better educated than the public as a whole, according to Pew.

The poll indicates an across the board fall in the public's opinion on the news media since 1985, when a similar survey was conducted by Times Mirror, Pew Research said.

"Two decades ago, public attitudes about how news organizations do their job were less negative. Most people believed that news organizations stood up for America... a majority believed that news organizations got the facts straight," Pew said in a report.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center describes itself as a nonpartisan "fact tank" that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world.

Remember that Detroit had the same, disdainful attitude about Japanese cars. It has learned a hard, painful lesson, but only in part. Detroit is STILL getting whipped in the marketplace, only the bleeding is slower now.

Both Detroit and the MSM remind me of the final weeks of Generalissimo Franco's life when the doctors were cutting away more and more body parts, while issuing bulletins that Franco was "alive" and recovering.

The media’s reaction: First, we aren’t “biased” or “inaccurate.” Second who’s cares what you think anyway?

The news business is the only one that can get away with treating their customers with contempt.

You forgot politicians! ;)

They keep on with their liberal crap and their readers or viewers keep leaving. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?

That was in 1987? Hard to believe people were that ignorant just twenty years ago.

More than two-thirds of the Internet users said they felt that news organizations don't care about the people they report on.

What kind of poll question would lead 2/3 of Internet users to answer this way? I want the news to be reported truthfully and without bias not some touchy-feely namby-pamby "we care about somebody and we are so sorry we have to report this news about them"!

The MSM is partisan AND biased. The American people are NOT stupid. The news business is the only one that can get away with treating their customers with contempt. People are just fed up with the Fourth Estate.

It would appear that way, and what a long time comin' it's been for people to weary of the contempt you speak of.

It is too bad that folks could never get their arms around the fact that the MSM is the marketing arm of the DNC fraudulently dressed up as jounalistic institutions to assign credibility to their ad copy where none was ever warranted. Pulitzer's are worthless awards.

Seems then this whole concept of "bias" is a brilliant red herring designed to keep conservatives chasing their tails in a never ending quest for "balance" where justification for such doesn't exist. I mean who ever heard of a marketing firm designing an ad campaign that gives credit for anything possitive to the client's competitors.

It is really too bad that the country can't figure out this simple truth. At least the liberals will have one less reason to believe they are smarter than the rest of us. Considering how long they have gotten away with the disquising ad copy as "journalism" it would appear up until now they have a point.

The media have gone from just being biased left, to propagandists. The false stories are growing more and more and the internet is setting the story straight. Look what just happened with TNR and their soldier’s fake stories (Scott Thomas Beauchamp).

I was on CSPAN recently (call in) and was talking about the bias, and the host asked me to stay on the line while he read an excerpt from the NYTimes and asked me my opinion. I simply told him: “Its the NYTimes, garbage in/garbage out”. He snickered, but didn’t comment on my comment.

LOL! Good response!

The media is like the Telluride City Council, that voted for Bush’s impeachment.

They’re so disconnected from everyone but their own little liberal circle, that they have no idea just how out of touch with the real world they are.

Now this begs the question: How many times was the media wrong and biased in the past without the checks and balances of the blogosphere?

In recent history, Vietnam really stands out as suffering the same criticisms, but there was no blogosphere to counteract the media monopoly. So, the media controlled daily imagery of the war and in a most negative way.

Nixon and Watergate deserve more scrutiny too. It was no secret that President Nixon and the press mutually loathed each other. The media was unrelenting in their "tricky dick" imagry of the President. They taught or conditioned the American public not to like him as much as anyhing he did wrong

Ronald Reagan was on the cusp of media smears where in the early 80's he was ridiculed as a napping senile fossil. Yet, at the time of his death and thanks to websites such as this one, his true legacy prevailed over the previous media stereotypes.

The media, even now, frequently gets a story wrong, has it proven to them, but never apologizes. The false reports from Baghdad reported in the New Republic and the Hadaipha case are two examples.

When will they ever learn? Why do they think they deserve our trust or respect?

Sheeple

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Sheeple is a term of disparagement, created by combining the words "sheep" and "people." It implies that those people it references believe whatever they are told, without processing it to be sure that it is an accurate representation of the real world around them. The term can be applied to any group, often in a political or comedic sense.
