Heck of a choice. It’s still slavery, plain and simple. If a draft rolls around, I should be able to say “No” with no financial or social consequences from the government.

Well, in a perfect world I suppose, but you face the same choice as regards taxation. One can join another branch of the service if they don't like the Army. Every major war we have fought and won against large effective competent militaries we have done with an army that was partially conscripted. They were good soldiers. If we ever fight an enemy like that again, conscription will happen or we will be defeated.
