Ex-Senate Majority Leader Mitchell Has Cancer

Doctor Feels It Can Be Cured

(AP) NEW YORK -- Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, who's leading the investigation into steroid use by baseball players, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to his law firm.

"The cancer is small, low grade, and localized, and can be effectively treated and cured," Mitchell's doctor Harvey Klein said in a statement released by the firm. "The prognosis is very good."

Mitchell, 73, said the diagnosis and treatment will not affect his baseball probe.

"The investigation, which is in its final phases, will be completed in the coming months and neither the substance nor the timing of the report will be affected in any way," he said in the release.

The former federal judge and prosecutor was hired by baseball commissioner Bud Selig in March 2006 to look into performance enhancing substances. Mitchell has not publicly stated a timetable for issuing his report.

The Maine Democrat entered the Senate in 1980 and rose to become majority leader in 1989. After leaving the Senate in 1995, he helped broker peace in Northern Ireland and investigated violence in the Middle East.

Now a New York resident, Mitchell is chairman of DLA Piper law firm.

Thank God for that.

Prayers up for Sen Mitchell and Family.

I always thought he was pretty decent, and smart as a whip - a far cry from what we have now.

God speed, George.

Same here. I didn't agree with his position on most of the issues that were important to me at the time he was in the Senate, but he seemed like a decent enough guy. Quite unlike the moonbatty crowd that's running the Congressional show now. I will pray for his recovery, no one should have to die of cancer.

I am learning that cancer is a brutal enemy. My 41 year old son was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He's on chemotherapy and doing well on it so far thank God, although we aren't yet used to seeing him bald. His oncologist says his cancer is a type that usually responds well to chemo and that he has a very good 10 year prognosis.

One other problem is that he's an airline pilot, and according FAA rules he won't be able to fly a commercial aircraft until his cancer has been cured or in remission for one full year. Of course he has a mortgage and all the other usual bills that a family with 2 kids has, and his wife's small business will be their only source of income for at least a year after his sick pay runs out.

I have never asked for anything like this in the 9 years I have been Freeping, but I would greatly appreciate anyone who will join me in offering a prayer for his full recovery.

"If politics is chess, Mitchell’s a grand master."

Aren't you generous.

He was and is a lying devious rat f**k who sandbagged GHW Bush on a deal to make spending cuts in return for a tax increase then reneged on the deal. And that is just for openers.

He is a "grand master" in the same way the late and unlamented Charles ("just say I don't recall") Ruff was a grand master as an attorney.

Praying in Jesus' Name for a full recovery for your son from cancer, as well as adequate provision for him and his family. May God give all of you peace and joy and draw you closer to Him and to each other as you walk through this valley.

Mitchell was smart, and very, very devious. Also tough as nails but in a low key manner. I could not stand the sight or sound of him. Those who laud him in contrast to other Dems have misplaced their even grudging praise, I believe. That said, I don’t wish Cancer on ANYONE and I wish him only the best of health.

I completely agree with you. As an individual, I pray for his health. His politics and his lack of integrity have always been sore spots for me. Shrewd and cunning can be good qualities. But not always.

I’ll spend as much time praying for him as he and others of his party spend praying for victory in Iraq.
