“At least 175 people have been killed in a series of suicide bomb attacks in northern Iraq, Iraq’s military says.”

Even if it turns out 30 dead Reuters and now the BBC can claim they got their info from “Iraq’s military” without giving out whom in the Iraqi Military gave them the info.

When I saw 175 people killed in a neighborhood in Northern Iraq, I immediately had two questions come to mind.

1. How did a bomb kill 175 people in a neighborhood? Houses are too far apart for single blast, or even three for that matter, to kill so many. A market place maybe, but a neighborhood? I DON’T KNOW.

2. It seems too convenient that the number killed is 175 and 200 wounded. Why 175? It just smells fishy.

I could be wrong.

Dozens killed in suicide attacks in Iraq

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/08/14/iraq.main/index.html

“Three bombers detonated three trucks laden with explosives in three locations around 8 p.m., officials said.”

Kind of strange since Reuters reported this over 9 hours ago according to their own website but it’s 1:36 am now in Baghdad.

Dhakil Qassim, mayor of Sinjar, a town near where the attacks occurred, said al-Qaida in Iraq was behind the attack, citing what he said were Kurdish government intelligence reports.

A few hours after an attack the mayor of a town get's to read Kurdish intelligence reports!!?? Even more so the area of the attack wasn't in Kurdish territory. This sounds like BS.

Multiple sources are being cited in the various reports. We may never know the exact death toll. It’s likely that many of the bodies are not intact. And the Muslim custom is to bury their dead immediately, so many of the bodies may not be taken to a morgue to be counted.

Well I’m not familiar with Yazidi funeral traditions, but the victims weren’t Muslims, but as already said Yazidis, an ancient pre-Islamic religion.

Of course we’ll never really know just like we never really know about all these bodies dumped every morning in Baghdad that no one ever sees.

Correct on the point that they are not Muslims, but according to Wikipedia - "Dead are buried in conical tombs immediately after death and buried with hands crossed."

US military sources are saying they don’t believe anywhere near 175 were killed although they do confirm that the 30 known killed will likely increase.

"At least 175 killed in north Iraq bombings - army"
(Reuters (Alternet) BAGHDAD, Aug 14 (Reuters) - At least 175 people were killed when three suicide bombers driving fuel tankers attacked a town, home to an ancient minority sect, in northern Iraq on Tuesday in one of the worst single incidents in the four-year-old war.

Iraqi army Captain Mohammad al-Jaad said at least another 200 people were wounded in the bombings in separate Yazidi neighbourhoods in the town of Kahtaniya, west of Mosul.
"175 Killed, 200 Wounded in Bombing Wave"
(IraqSlogger) Mosul, Aug 14 (VOI)- Scores of civilians were killed or wounded on Tuesday evening in a string of blasts that took place near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a security source said.

"Two cars rigged with explosives simultaneously detonated in Siba Sheikh Khidr housing compound, west of Mosul, killing 175 civilians and wounding over 200," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Suicide bombers kill 20 in Iraq sect attack"
(Edmonton Journal) BAGHDAD - Suicide bombers driving fuel tankers killed 20 people and wounded 70 in what appeared to be an attack on an ancient minority sect in northern Iraq on Tuesday, police said.

Police said it appeared three bombers driving separate tankers had attacked Yazidi sect members in different neighbourhoods in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, detonating their vehicles in quick succession.

"3 Truck Bombs Strike Ancient Iraqi Sect"
(Guardian) BAGHDAD (AP) - Three suicide truck bombers targeted members of an ancient religious sect in northwestern Iraq, killing at least 20 people. In Baghdad, dozens of uniformed gunmen in 17 official vehicles stormed an Oil Ministry compound and abducted a deputy oil minister and three other officials, a ministry spokesman and police said.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the bombings targeting the Yazidis - a primarily Kurdish sect that worships an angel figure considered to be the devil by some Muslims and Christians.

"At least 175 people have been killed in a series of suicide bomb attacks in northern Iraq, Iraq's military says."
(BBC) The blasts apparently targeted a Kurdish religious minority, the Yazidi sect, near Mosul. At least four blasts hit areas which house the community.

A Mosul police source told the BBC that there had been "large loss of life".

Tensions between the sect and local Muslims have grown since a Yazidi girl was reportedly stoned by her community in April for converting to Islam.

"Dozens killed in multiple suicide attacks in Iraq"
(CNN) BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Suicide bombings in a northern Iraqi town Tuesday targeted a religious minority and left at least 120 people dead and 150 wounded, according to police officials, who said there were three bombings in three locations.

Iraqi army officials, however, said there were four blasts that killed at least 175 and wounded 200.

Three bombers detonated three trucks laden with explosives in three locations around 8 p.m., officials said.

PJ O’Rourke once said something to the effect that they invented the 0 in the Middle East, but that they also invented every other number since. We will just have to wait.
