Will Democrats Abandon the Middle?

"They'll find their way back to the middle. And if they don't, they won't win." So says a blunt Harold Ford Jr., chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, of his party's current crop of presidential candidates. The question is just how many would-be Democratic presidents recognize the wisdom of his words.

Mr. Ford is in a feisty mood throughout our chat, as well he might be given the shelling his group has recently endured at the keyboards of the far left. Skip back 15 years, and the DLC stood as the proud architect of Bill Clinton's "New Democrat" campaign victory. Liberals derided the outfit's goals of nosing the party back toward the political center, but Mr. Clinton understood the perils of running as Jimmy Carter. He took the DLC's advice, talked up "opportunity, responsibility, community" and won.

Today, the DLC is again battling for the souls of those Democrats who would occupy the White House, urging them toward a centrist agenda that will seek to convince the broad middle that Democrats can be trusted on national security...

--snip--

Making it harder is that this newly energized left is directing inordinate firepower on the DLC itself, in a crazed, purist drive to purge any group that would exert a moderating influence on the Democratic Party. New Republic scribe Noam Scheiber let loose a few weeks back in a New York Times hit piece, calling the DLC "radioactive" and "quaint," gloating that its "fading influence was good news for the entire party," and arguing that it should just get lost. Markos Moulitsas, chief flogger-blogger on the Daily Kos, this week slammed the DLC as a group that wants to "blur distinctions with the GOP," and reveling that Democrats had won in 2006 because liberals like himself had "forced" Americans to pick sides...

There is truth in that statement.

And you haven’t seen nothing like the crowing that will be done for 8 years when/if Hillary takes back the White House.

Think about Slick Willie on steriods - and with a democrat controlled congress.
Think about having to say “President Clinton” again for another 8 years.

It is shaping up that way.

The notion the Socialist Democrats ever had a middle ground is ludicrous. The implication being they have been willing to abandon their Socialist principle of wresting power from the individual and placing it in control of a select few who run the government. That has never happened nor will it ever happen with Socialists.

To paraphrase Richard Nixon ‘to get the nomination, run as far to the right as you need to; to win the Presidency, run as far to the middle as you can’. I think this is what all the candidates, left and right, are doing. We need to document every moonbat utterance that Hillary! makes to use in the Presidential election. I hope there was good sound being recorded at the recent Dem forum with the GLBT crowd.

How make a link open in a new browser window

I don't know about you, but I don't like to get oversize graphics. My comments get skewed, and I can't see the sidebars. That link will let you and other folks view oversize graphics in a new window.

Ever? FDR, Truman, JFK? I'd say they once did, yeah, but they abandoned it a long time ago. Clinton went about half way back (Rubin, welfare reform and a balanced budget, dragged to the last two of course) and was nationally viable because of it. He also was not a complete wimp on national security, though not talented. The present crop are all to his left, and his wife is the least leftist among them (which is saying something).

They’ll find their way back to the middle after the Dem ‘08 Convention in Denver. Right now, they are having to be whores for the gays, lesbians, labor unions, welfare queens, YouTube, MoveOn.org and The Daily Kos in order to get the nomination.

Once the nominees for Prez and VEEP are determined, then they’ll dump their ultra-left wing pimps and go back to the middle.

The Dem elites have thrown in their lot with the far-left nutjobs. While they’ll still get the votes of most of the Dem sheep who have no idea who Markos Moulitsas is or even who Karl Rove is, they do not reflect the social mores of them. Propaganda for gay marriage and gun confiscation does not appeal to most of the average Dems I know, but they’ll pull the lever for Hillary in 2008 anyway thinking that the Dems still look out for the “little man”. It’ll take a very good educational campaign program by Republicans to make them realize that the Dem Party jumped ship on middle-class America decades ago.

"clinton"

You've got Bill pegged right. He was always more of an opportunist than an ideologue willing to say or do anything that would put him in the oval office. Hillary is another matter. While just as power-hungry she actually believes all the bilge the leftist propaganda machine vomits out.

Schumer wrote a book about appealing to middle-class America, and they specifically sought "moderates" to run in 2006. We'll see what the GOP can do with it in 2008, but the neoCOMs have some huge contradictions that they built themselves.

The only reason that the dems are enable to occupy the center is if the GOP abandons it.
