CAMP PENDLETON – Tens of thousands of American and Iraqi troops serve together daily, but last December a dispute while on duty led to a Marine reservist stabbing an Iraqi soldier to death as the two stood watch in Anbar province.
Now Lance Cpl. Delano V. Holmes, 21, is accused of killing Mutather Jasem Muhammed Hassin inside a tiny observation post in Fallujah, according to charges filed by the Marine Corps.
Holmes, an Indianapolis resident who was on his first deployment, was arraigned July 31 and is scheduled for court-martial at Camp Pendleton in December. The case marks a rare instance of a U.S. service member being charged with killing a member of Iraq's fledging military.
The two men argued and began fighting after Hassin illuminated their position with the glow of a cell phone and then with a cigarette in the early morning hours of Dec. 31, said Orange County defense attorney Stephen Cook, who represents Holmes.
Snipers often targeted the elevated watch post in downtown Fallujah. Holmes, fearing that the cell phone and cigarette would tip off ever-present snipers, gestured to Hassin to stop. A fight ensued when Hassin laughed, Cook said.

Self preservation is self defense.
Remember the Marine snipers (5-6) ambushed on top of a building while working with the friendly IA..who either gave up the position or may have shot them in the back.... Did anybody ever find out what really happened on that roof?
Anybody that lit up, broke silence, jingled tags or otherwise gave up our position ended up eating the business end of my rifle butt or a size 10 1/2 boot using the rear entrance to check his tonsils. WTF?
This ain't a camping trip with buddies or a night out in the boonies grab assing.... your LIFE depends on discipline and stealth.
I wonder how many other IA shadows in the tower light up now or use their cell phones?

Who is the investigating officer that recommended a court martial? Who is Lt. Gen. Mattis that approved it?
This corruption must stop.
me too .
I know of an incident where someone was court martialed for waking up some sob who fell asleep on firewatch with a flak jacket upside the head.
I won’t tell you what I think about that. Folks might think I ‘m a cold hearted bitch.
