Alaskan volcano erupts

McClatchy Newspapers

HOMER, Alaska | An Alaska volcano erupted Wednesday, sending ash more than 8,000 feet into the atmosphere.

Pavlof Volcano, which sits on the remote Alaska Peninsula 600 miles southwest of Anchorage, has not erupted for 11 years.

Eyewitnesses on several ships reported seeing incandescent blocks falling down the east-southeast flank of the volcano Tuesday night, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported Wednesday.
