My Credit Score is Better Than Yours (VANITY)
me | 8/21/07 | me

Posted on 08/21/2007 1:00:50 PM PDT by the_devils_advocate_666

I just went through the process of getting my wife a new (well, 2006 anyway) car. I had wanted to save enough to pay cash but my old car wasn't going to hold out quite that long. So off to the bank to secure the extra funds. In the process I found out today that my credit score was 819. The loan officer said he'd only seen one higher score. He's young, so maybe it isn't all that great, but...

What does a credit score like 819 do for me? Is there anyway I can leverage this to my advantage in the future? What's the highest possible credit score?

So who can top my 819?

Highest possible is 850.

I can’t but we’re up there... my wife knows the score... she’s in charge of the accounts.

Mine doesn’t matter because I don’t have debt.

Just wait 'til you get divorced.

The exact same thing happened to me. Had kids and it took another beating.

I did also but then got divorced. So I cancelled her credit cards. That helped a lot.

850 is the max. Some say 900. Highest I’ve seen is an 849.

In all honesty, once you’re over 720, going any higher doesn’t make a hill of beans difference.

What can it do for you? Gimme your SSN and birthdates and I’ll file a full report on what it can do for you.

So off to the bank to secure the extra funds.

You were better off going to a credit union, where the average 48 month new auto loan is 6.22% APR vs. the banks at 7.57% APR (source).

Some credit unions (example) have new car loan rates as low as 3.50% APR for 36 months.

A near-perfect credit score is irrelevant if you can't find the lowest rate lenders to match.

Mine doesn’t matter because I don’t have debt.

Until this car loan the only debt I had was our house. But my plan will be to have the car paid off by the end of the year. Use the credit cards because I like the cash back but always pay off the balances every month. I dream of the day I can pay off the house...

I had excellent credit.....then I got divorced. One month before my youngest child turned 18, the ex took me to court to have child support increased. I thought I was home free. She got the child support increased and made retroactive for five years. They then said I was in arrears and it went on my credit report, in effect calling me a deadbeat dad.

AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE......I paid up, but it took me 8 years to get that freaking thing off my credit report.

NEVER, EVER trust your ex wife to not screw with you.

The ability to borrow money can be a great tool but it’s not a great financial move in general. Live below your means. That’s the only way to get rich.
