Sex in the Syllabus [YOUR TUITION DOLLARS AT WORK]
TIME Magazine ^ | Mar. 26, 2006 | LISA TAKEUCHI CULLEN

Posted on 08/23/2007 2:24:40 AM PDT by Enchante

With classwork like this, who needs to play? Undergraduates taking Cyberporn and Society at the State University of New York at Buffalo survey Internet porn sites....

It's called the porn curriculum, and it's quietly taking root in the ivory tower. A small but growing number of scholars are probing the aesthetic, societal and philosophical properties of smut in academic departments ranging from literature to film, law to technology, anthropology to women's studies. Those specialists argue that graphic sexual imagery has become ubiquitous in society, so it's almost irresponsible not to teach young people how to deal with it....

Students agree that watching skin flicks in a classroom--as opposed to, say, a dorm room--can offer new perspectives. Lindsey Reich....thought herself fairly progressive when she signed up for Professor Don Kulick's sexuality-and-gender course last year. Then he screened a film featuring the porn star Annie Sprinkle having sex with a transgendered man and another showing female ejaculation. To her surprise, Reich was shocked. "I realized I do have my biases about what is a man and what is a woman--I mean, I grew up in the Midwest--and it made me want to explore these stereotypes and get past them," she says. "Those films did that better than any academic book."....

Administrators at schools that offer porn studies find themselves caught between their desire for cutting-edge scholarship and their reluctance to stir up controversy. "I wish I had more faculty doing this kind of exciting work," says David Penniman, a dean at Buffalo who oversees Halavais' cyberporn course. Penniman acknowledges that the graphic images used in the class may upset some people, but, he adds, "it's tricky for a dean or university president to try to dictate what should or shouldn't be in the syllabus.".....

Article is from '06 but describes apparent ongoing trends to introduce fashionable "porn ed" courses into the college curriculum. Good to know that liberals always know how to promote sound ideas about high academic standards.

This is enlightenment done Western style. In Buddhism the goal is not to have a desire for anything. In this, the goal is not to have a belief about anything.

Now that is one creepy quote. Why do I picture this dean breathing heavily as he says this? Yuck!!!

Well, THAT is a pile of crap right there!!

Universities long ago gave up being serious and have settled for "controversy" ever since.

I should have been so lucky in 1963....sigh

Well, this is not any worse then the rest of the garbage
being fed young people in school from K through graduate school.
I know there are exceptions such as Hillsdale, but they are few and far between.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Welcome to the liberal mind. Their constant need to prove their moral superiority often results in turning morality on its head simply so that there will be a difference between themselves and the masses that they can then crow over.

Communists Goals (Circa 1950's)

11. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

18. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

19. Break down culture standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and T.V.

20. Present homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity, as "normal, natural, healthy."

The purpose is to breakdown all moral and cultural ties within a society so that society may be destroyed and Class Struggle and Revolution will replace it.

They forgot that suspending disbelief is only a means to an end. Making it an end in itself is self contradictory and ultimately means the creation of new “dogma” from other unexamined desires.

They might as well have a course on the attributes of turds but I suppose porn courses and the ever-popular watch TV courses are close enough.
It’s sad that somebody who knows (knew?) the difference between a man and a woman now thinks that’s a “bias”, then dutifully trashes their Midwestern upbringing as ignorant.

In other words, they become university graduates who are dumber than Jethro with his sixth grade education! I have talked to some who lack the basic skills and knowledge I had to have to finish grade school in 1956.

if this article isn't a gag, then I say it's now officially over. America's gone over the edge, you can kick and scream all you want, but this barrel's gone over the falls, folks. Start doing your research on the unravelling of societies and govern yourself accordingly.

Pray for mercy, because we're all going to need lots of it.

I got a good education at a reasonable cost at the State Univ at Buffalo in its school of pharmacy. I’m glad there are people dumb enough to pay tuition for the useless crap classes too.

We can’t help it if we were born experts at sex. I guess other people feel they need a teacher. :)

I love how the academics try to justify this by using flowery language and analytical terminology.

Horse pookey - just a bunch of horny old elbow patches getting their jollies by titallating young adults. And sitting at home with a wild-eyed grin screening the "art" they will present to the class.

Communists aren’t too fond of traditional families either.

This is how sexual predators work.

A few movies, a beer or two...

Bravo. You’ve given the best explanation of the liberal mind set I’ve seen anywhere.
