Katyn , an album preceeds premiere of film by Andrzej Wajda

A book entitled Katyn is to be released on September 3rd , that is two weeks before the premiere of Andrzej Wajda’s film under the same title. The album contains photographs, archive documents and reproductions of historical maps and will be an introduction to the film. The album will also contain stills from the set of Wajda’s film, and personal commentaries of the Oscar winning Polish director. Wajda, whose father was killed in Katyn , says the film will be a story of the Katyn lie, a story of how for years the fact of the murder committed on Poles by Stalin’s NKVD secret services was denied and the blame put on Nazis. Katyn is the first feature film about the crime of 1940 on 22 thousand Polish civilians and officers by the NKVD.

Any idea what the outside-of-Poland distribution plans are?
In Poland it will be in cinemas since September 17th.
And I’m absolutely positive, that there will be some distribution in America and Europe, but I don’t know the details so far.
But finally they decided to change the title simply to “Katyn” - because of the plans relating to distribution outside-of-Poland

The Nazis and the Soviets essentially partitioned Poland in 1939. The Soviets collected up all the officers of the Polish army in their sector (several thousand), imprisoned them for a short time at Katyn, then shot them in the head and stuffed them in mass graves.

When Wajda was honored at the Oscars back in 1992, he was introduced by....Jane Fonda.
Obviously Wajda wasn’t aware of Hanoi Jane’s previous activities.

Very interesting! It would be good to see more movies about how badly some countries were impacted by Stalin, but like others have mentioned, Communist-loving Hollywood would never allow it.
They had the Poles in several camps. They took the Poles to at least three separate execution sites [Katyn was one].
The Poles executed at Katyn were taken there by train, and then truxcked [over a period of several weeks] to an NKVD “villa” [near the Hill of Goats] where they were shot, one at a time in the basement by NKVD executioners [one man did a large number of the killings by himself], and then taken to pre-dug graves. Some of the POles may have been killed at the grave sites.
The Germans, who occupied the area in 1941, found the graves in 1943, and announced their findings to the world. They allowed Poles, as well as neutrals on the site, and had a commission of netrals’ experts examine the bodies, etc. The Germans succeeded in rupturing relations between the Free Poles and the USSR, but Britain, and the US backed Soviet claims that it was a German operation [Interestingly, Katyn was not charged as a war crime against the SS at Nuremberg]
Gorbachev finally admitted that the NKVD had done the murders, sometime arond 1991.

Considering the huge population of ethnic Poles here it would seem a slam dunk for sales even if it went directly to DVD.
