What part of “it was a joke” didn’t you get? Then I read that huge post, in response to a well noted joke, and you don’t even answer the question that was actually serious in nature. I was wondering if you had been to Costa Rica yet, and how it was.

Oh, and being in shape isn’t exclusive to home school families. My kids are fit, I am fit (not overweight, toned, still workout) my husband is fit. Some of the activities we participated in during the past year are cross country skiing, snowboarding, riding dirt bikes (3 of 5 family members competed in this including me), gymnastics, mountain biking, hunting, target shooting, hiking, basketball, sledding, tennis and just running around the yard playing normal kid stuff. My oldest son was in kindergarten in a public school and we still had time to do it. Parents could find all kinds of time to spend with their kids if they make it a priority. In our family, it certainly is.

I don’t home school, yet I make meals from scratch. And just last night, I told my kids they wouldn’t get any pie, if they didn’t eat their dinner. OK, dinner was leftovers from the two previous nights, but all the choices were made from scratch. They ate all their dinner, because they have missed out on dessert before. Last night we had a pie fresh from the oven or a huge fruit salad I made that afternoon with yogurt. They weren’t about to miss that.

I couldn’t care less if people want to home school their kids. That is a core principle of being a conservative. It isn’t my business how people decide to raise their families. I haven’t met one parent who has said, “We are trying to muck our kids up as best we can.” We live in a great district. Since we pay for it, we will use it, until there comes a time we don’t see fit.

I have never met a fat homeschooler who has been homeschooled from the beginning.

Maybe that is why homeschooling is continuing its phenomenal growth. Parents are beginning to notice.

BTW, read this this morning on foxnews.com:

The motorcycle crashed into the car and Campbell was thrown through the rear window, Thatcher said. Martinez then drove away and realized when he got home that the motorcyclist was in his car, Thatcher said. Martinez then drove to a Riverside County fire station where 20-year-old Campbell was declared dead, according to the coroner's office. Martinez was arrested and booked for investigation of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and driving under the influence. Bail was set at $75,000.

Let's review. A drunk can kill someone with their car, drive home with the body and get bail at $75,000, and these parents, who are being investigated for abuse and the kids are clearly not dead, get bail set at $100,000. I find this odd. I thought there were guidelines set for bail amounts according to the charges.

Worth repeating...thanks for the sane post.

As it is 'that time of year' (back to school) the public school bashers are out in force. I made the mistake of reading a thread last night about unsuitable reading list material for a school district in Illinois. And though I should know better (have been here 8 years) I had to respond to a post that stated (quote) "placing a child in the public school system is abject child abuse." Sometimes I wonder why I spend any time here (FR).

I think I'll lower my blood pressure today and go find out what Brittany Spears is up to...PerezHilton here I come...

I know alot of homeschoolers get hotlined when neighbors see the kids at home during school hours.

In NY homeschoolers let the local school district know they are homeschooling, and that cuts down on false hotlines.

In our local district there seems to be a good relationship between the homeschoolers and the public school.
So...if the local DSS gets a call, they will first call the school for the status of the family before wasting everyone’s time and upsetting people.

“I have a feeling some may home school for this very reason, not that I am saying any on here feel that way, but when I, as a teacher, hear no end of child abuse from the ones here on FR who choose to home school, I enjoy seeing articles like this one”

Yep, coming through this thread late.

I honestly can’t understand what you’ve written here — but, I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that it was insightful at this point.

I saw where you posted to someone that if someone doesn’t understand your post maybe they weren’t meant to understand it? I don’t understand WHY you would choose to take this attitude vs. explaining what you meant — it’s very condescending, and your statement is either missing some words, or your “cleverness” has conveniently hidden your true meaning, even from VERY intelligent people. (oh, and you do realize that this entire paragraph of your comment is a run-on sentence, don’t you?)

I truly want to understand what you meant before your words make me think badly about what might perhaps be an insightful comment. So, are you saying that you see evidence of child abuse among the homeschoolers here in FR? Or, are you saying the homeschoolers here on FR endlessly accuse YOU (as a public school teacher) of child abuse?

There is no homeschooler I know that pretends that there aren’t some families who abuse their children. I would however caution that a very large majority of families who choose to homescool are very GOOD parents and VERY involved in their children’s lives and education vs. many public school parents. I’m sure you see evidence in your own classes daily of parents who could care less what or how their child is learning and see you as nothing more than a day-care provider (which is a shame).

Child abuse is something that happens within ALL segments of the world’s populations. It happens MORE in low-income areas where people are plagued with economic, and social problems, yes. BUT, child abuse is not confined to this group — neither is it confined to public school families, private school families, OR homeschool families.

Child abusers (molesters, hitters, emotional abusers, etc...) come in all walks of life from the richest most successful people you’ve met, to the poorest. Child abusers can be cops, teachers, firefighters, CEO’s, retail workers, etc.. etc...

As for being happy about seeing an article such as this. I can only assume that you meant you were glad this was reported. Because, if that’s NOT what you meant then I would seriously question your own personal aptitude in teaching children in the first place. Anyone, who thinks this is a GOOD thing shouldn’t be anywhere near ANYONE’s children...

If you don’t have the time or wherewithall to formulate an actual rebuttal to evidence you dislike, the correct response is to simply not post. Claiming that whomever is a “loser” with “no life” for having an actual argument backed by scientific studies, and that you could come up with similar results if you wanted to but are far too busy, since they “have things to do”, is commonly accepted as a form of surrender on the interwebs;
