Bible In U.S. Soldier's Pocket Stops Sniper Bullet

Pfc. Brendon Schweigart, 22, who is from Andover, was helping retrieve a tank in Iraq when he was hit by a sniper's bullet earlier this month.

Schweigart said the bullet stopped right where the Bible was in his shirt pocket.

"(The Bible) definitely prevented more serious injury, because if it wouldn't have been there, it would have ricocheted off my bullet-proof plate and more than likely would have gone back into my chest, causing more damage," Schweigart said.

Schweigart said he also thinks prayers from those in the United States helped him recover.

The 22-year-old said he will stay in Iraq until his tour of duty is finished in winter.

"Thanks for the prayers and the letters," Schweigart said. "Everybody wishing me to be well and thanks everybody for the support."

I wonder if it was a Gideon Bible. I love the Gideon Bibles. I always have mine with me.

Very early in his career Woody Allen (I know) had a routine about carrying a bullet around in his shirt pocket as a reminder of some experience his dad had in the war.

As he (Allen) was walking along Broadway an enraged athiest through an 'offensive' Gideon's Bible out a high floor hotel window. The Bible struck Allen in the chest and would have killed him if not for the bullet in his pocket.

Woody is known for spending more time soliciting teenagers for a quickie than real history.

I suppose that if it had been a Queeran they’d be screaming about defacing the book of hate.

A popular item in WWII was a Bible with steel plates in the front and back covers.

I prefer Kevlar myself.

This is not the first time this has happened in the Iraq war. I’ve read of at least one other case a couple of years ago.

A great product idea: Bibles with Kevlar covers, and maybe bibles with a retractable blade (since it’s the sword of the spirit).

LOL

In GW I I hit every Christian store in the area to try and find a bible that had an unmarked cover. No luck.

The store owners seemed quite unaware that bringing a Bible into Saudi country would net the death penalty. Arabs can be funny that way.

It is not one world, not even close.

Anyway, got by with with my old bookbinding skills and a trip to the used book store.

Do yo have any idea how hard it is to find two hard cover books with the same sized binding?

I remember an old C&W song about something like this back in the 1960’s.

After being hit the soldier decided to read his punctured bible with these words...”If it saved my life it might save my soul!”

I remember reading somewhere that there are Bibles published specifically for smuggling into Muslim countries. The actually made them look like the Koran.
