Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Tuesday in an interview with Nevada television station KLAS said that if elected president he would allow individual states to keep abortion legal, the Washington Post reports.
Romney earlier this month in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos said he supports a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion nationwide. According to the Post, the "two very different statements" reflect a "challenge" for Romney as he attempts to be a "champion of the antiabortion movement".
In an interview with the Associated Press Tuesday, Romney said that giving states control to "fashion their own laws with regard to abortion" should be the "next step" in the abortion debate. Top Romney advisers on Tuesday said the governor supports a two-tiered process in which states first would obtain authority to regulate abortion after Roe v. Wade -- the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court case that effectively barred state abortion bans -- is overturned. The second step would be a constitutional amendment that bans most abortions nationwide.
James Bopp -- an attorney who has represented antiabortion groups and a top Romney adviser on abortion -- said, "There's no flip-flopping. There's no contradiction. There's simply step one and step two." Jon Ralston, a columnist for the Las Vegas Sun who interviewed Romney for KLAS, said he believes Romney's "moral positions conflict" with his "states'-rights opinions," adding, "I don't see how you can be antiabortion, be in favor of a constitutional amendment and be in favor of states' rights". So is Mitt Romney. It is clear that 1.)people aren't reading the entire articles and going from the MSM headlines and 2.)the MSM is trying to turn Republicans against Romney by misstating his position.
Romney wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned first. He's made that quite clear. That would return the decision about banning or not banning abortion to the states. Then, when the country is ready, he would support the Human Life Amendment which would define life as beginning at conception. Romney already believes that life begins at conception, but he knows that there is no way that 3/4s of the states would ratify such an amendment at this time. His first item of business, as it pertains to abortion, would be to appoint pro-life judges who would seek to overturn Roe v. Wade. When you hear someone state that he would "legalize abortion" or "allow abortion to remain legal in some states" it should be obvious to you what they're doing. The entire pro-life movement wants to have Roe v. Wade and most agree that would be an essential first step before trying to win the majority of states over to a Constitution Amendment which would result in a ban throughout all states.
How are you going to get 3/4 of the states to ratify an Amendment which would essentially ban abortion nationwide.
But, agree or disagree with the exact method of eliminating abortion and promoting a culture of life, you seem to have admitted that Mitt Romney is pro-life and will work to defend life if elected President.
It was a joke!
It seem like a butt end!:)

Call it what you will... We believe in 3 distinct and separate members of the Godhead, and we believe they are one, as he commanded us to be one.
1 Jn. 5: 7
7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
John 17: 21 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
FReeper fproy is asking for "documentation" on Joseph and his wives...fire away!
I have news for some of the Freepers out there: We do not live in a theocracy. Mitt Romney (who I am not a big fan of, BTW) can still be a Christian while supporting the fundamental principles of the US Constitution. For those of you not familiar with one of the reasons conservatives are against Roe v. Wade, it is because it is bad constitutiona law. It usurped the rights of the states to define their own limits on abortion.
We have seen that the vast majority of states would limit abortions or eliminate them altogether. This would then give us time to pass a constitutional amendment banning the procedure. His strategy is the perfect short and long-term solution to this matter.
BTW, proudofthesouth, as a new Christian, I would think that you would be a little less quick to judge who is Christian and who isn’t. “Pride” & “Hubris” are a very un-Christian character traits.
seven,
Indeed He gives beauty for ashes. I am so blessed to be under the Grace that Jesus Christ so freely proferred. I have long ago forgiven and forgotten the past that you keep speaking of, and now struggle daily with living with present hubby of 24 years. It is you who seems fixated upon my past - - whatever scars I carry are simply reminders of God’s love for me.
You do not believe this seven, but I love you mormons, even when you are being mean and vindictive. I know where you are coming from. You feel compelled to defend your religion just as I feel compelled to join the “Lamb’s War” which is not against people, but against “principalities and powers.
Again I will turn the other cheek and forgive you for bringing up my past. God has placed it as far as the East is from the West. To you guys who are “fruit inspectors.” I will place my fruit against yours any day....and yet it is not for my glory but for His.
“Belief in many Gods”? Ignorance is a very ugly thing when one presumes to lecture others on certain topics. I find it sadly ironic how harshly judgemental and un-Christian many professed “Christians” are. I pray that you start acting more as Jesus would want you to act toward others of different faiths.
gd,
And I presume you do not know that mormonism
is polytheistic?

Thanks for clearing this up for us all. We were pretty

You all make such a big issue of our religious past, church history, in understanding our present psyche. Why is not the same evaluation of equal consideration?
And I don’t “keep” bringing it up, nor am I being mean and vindictive, or fixated on it, as you say.
However, if it makes you feel better, then I too shall turn the other check towards your words.
I’m glad you have found happiness, and as one who also has found happiness, I would ask that you honor us by not constantly trying to tear us down. It's a simple request.
That being said, Mr. Romney appears to be laying out what is actually achievable.
I support passing a constitutional amendment banning abortion.
However, I can also see that we’re not going to get two-thirds of each House of Congress and 38 states to go along with that just yet. If anyone thinks that that result is imminent, let me know. I’d be interested in your reasoning.
Nonetheless, in the next few years, we could see Roe overturned. This would permit states to restrict abortion. Some states would retain abortion on demand in their laws. Other states would range in restricting abortion from a little to a lot. Some states would nearly ban abortion.
It’s from this mixed legal regime that the push for a constitutional amendment will need to arise. When folks see that civilization doesn’t break down in states that virtually ban abortion, more folks in more states will be persuadable to restrict laws further. When it becomes increasingly apparent that the sky will not fall to pass a constitutional amendment pretty much banning abortion, then it will become a political possibility.
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Very well said, thank you!
