United Nations weapons inspectors discovered six to eight vials of a dangerous nerve gas, phosgene, as they were cleaning out offices at a U.N. building in New York this morning, federal authorities tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The federal authorities said the office, in a U.N. building near headquarters, was being evacuated and the White House had been notified at 10 a.m.

New York police and fire officials reported to the scene around 12:15 this afternoon.

A U.N. spokesperson said a statement would be issued shortly.

Authorities said the phosgene was believed to have been discovered in Iraq and manufactured prior to 1991.

Former U.N. weapons inspectors told ABCNews.com that vials of phosgene had also been used by inspectors in Iraq to help calibrate air sampling instruments.

My great uncle once showed me scars on his lower neck/chest from some gas attack think it was phosgene? he must have had a mask on his face but the skin still burned.

Anyone else find it ironic how the UN Weapons Inspectors couldn’t even find the WMD in their offices (until they were moving and emptied the placE), yet they are supposed to be the arbiter of weather we had the ‘right’ to go into Iraq or not?

Nothing like getting to the scene in a hurry.

it took the Germans until WW2 to invent (and use, on Jews and others) nerve gasses like Sarin.

They mostly used Zyklon B on the Jews. A cynanide-based insecticide from the Twenties. It was a delousing agent and had an additive to make it stink as a warning to anyone nearby. The U.S. supposedly used it to delouse Mexican migrant workers and the trains they rode on to go pick crops back in the Twenties and Thirties. When the Nazis gassed the Jews with it, they had the manufacturer remove the warning smell so they couldn't tell they were being gassed until they started to drop. Earlier, the Nazis did use it properly to keep down lice in the camps as well.

Zyklon B has a weird history. First, to delouse. Then later misused to murder Jews in the camps.

LOL, how the heck can the UN say that America has failed in finding WMD’s in Iraq, when they can’t even find them in their own office building!

Don’t know if this helps with your question:

I live near Oak Ridge Tennessee, and remember, not long after the U.S. went into Iraq, local news stories about chemicals from Iraq being processed through the DOE facility here.

“Was this found in a closet in Koffi’s old office?” HA! The first thing I thought of was, well, I guess Kofi forgot to clean out his desk before the proverbial screen door hit him in his you-know-what.

Thanks for reminding me of that. I seem to recall that UNMOVIC and the UN were complaining about the US taking possession of the chemicals, etc. and not letting them do it...lol!

I guess their method of disposal in the closet in the UN building is much more secure....(LOL)

ahem...if the other candidates end up disappointing you, Ron Paul has been trying to get the U.N. kicked out of America for many years. Last I heard, that is the official platform of the Texas Republican Party (you know, the one Bush won't go near, LOL, the real Texas Republicans).

I thought phosgene was a blister agent, one similar to chlorine, which causes terrible damage to the lungs, causing them to quickly fill with fluids, rather than a nerve agent.

Kind of like the gas chamber?

IIRC, chemical tablets are dropped into acid to generate hydrogen cyanide gas...
