Whatever movie needs, N.J. has

With forests to corn fields to mountains to concrete jungles, New Jersey seems to have it all when it comes to landscapes. So is a drive through the state as good as a drive from coast to coast? Well, it is for the makers of "Buzzkill," an independent film with Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond that was shot around northern New Jersey over the last four weeks.

The low-budget flick is a dark comedy about a writer down on his luck -- played by actor Daniel Raymont, who has played small television roles -- who drives from his home in New Jersey to attend a meeting in Los Angeles in hopes of trying to get his career rolling. During his travels, he meets up with a serial killer, played by Hammond, and ends up traveling with him across country.

With a tight budget, filmmakers thought about the best way to "cheat going across the country," said Thomas Hanna, a native of Tenafly who is the movie's producer. "Jersey is actually perfect for that. We could start in an urban environment like Paterson and them move on to corn fields in Allamuchy," Hanna said.

You may have spotted the crew filming in various places around the state since the beginning of August. Several farming areas and local businesses around Morris, Warren and Passaic counties were used as some of the spots in rural America where the main character stops during his road trip. The Galaxy Diner in Butler was turned into a typical Midwestern, roadside diner. Butler also doubled up as a locale in Colorado when the crew shot outside of the Roserne Motor Lodge. "The façade of the motel is stone and with a backdrop of woods, you could really be in Colorado," Hanna explained.

“Mountains” might be laying it on thick for a state whose high point is 1,803 ft.

Check out the website seaofdust.com for another independent horror film shot in NJ. Prety good production, took advantage of NJ’s diverse topography.

Maybe that is why the first real action movie, THE GREAT TRAIN ROBERY, was filmed in NJ.
