When put in a situation where you’re fighting fiercely just to stay alive, there should be a clear understanding that our troops will be required to make split second decisions, and that their actions in the heat of battle will be, barring clear and overwhelming evidence to the contrary, understood to be an acceptable act of self preservation.

We can not put limitations on our troops that prevent them from hesitating. We’ve asked them to put themselves in harms way. We should give them the right to do whatever they have to to stay alive and do their job.

Thnaks for the info, camerakid400. I’m glad CNN and some other news sources are finally catching up with the evidence that’s been out there. This info has been in print for some time - that there was a major firefight involving insurgents who had fled the original IED and house assault in Haditha.

I guess seeing is believing. Whatever it takes for the major media types to finally realize this was an all-out battle that day between insurgents and Marines, works for me. Unfortunately, innocent civilians were caught in the early stages of a battle the insurgents chose to wage.

"...Marines engaged in fierce firefights and called in air strikes to level buildings -- often with no definitive idea of who was inside."

D'oh! How are they supposed to find out? Call a "time out" and ask the enemy what's in the building? Police in a America don't always know definitively what's in a building before the go in. The mere fact that some "journalist" (NewSpeak for idiot) writes such a sentence, betrays total ignorance of what happens in a WAR.

I find it abhorrent that American fighting forces are in a position to have to fight for hours on end under conditions the average person can’t begin to imagine, and then YEARS later have their conduct of the battle examined under a microscope by people who weren’t there. What a crock.

They were there, their lives were on the line, they did what they what they felt the situation required of them. If the powers that be want to avoid this kind of situation then set the rule of engagement to support early and effective responses to real or perceived threats. Let those we are dealing with no in no uncertain terms that the safety of our troops is top on our list, not the avoiding of collateral damage.

The enemy has used our PC drive to avoid collateral damage as just another arrow in their quiver of tactics. Opponents to the war in Iraq, or more correctly opponents to a victory by our side in Iraq, are quick to point to Vietnam and My Lai but there is no comparison. These troops were fighting for their lives with an enemy that will do anything, including maximizing the collateral damage to innocent civilians, to win. In My Lai the troops moved in and killed hundreds of unarmed civilians, the sort of thing our enemy in Iraq will do at the drop of a hat if it thinks it will help prevent locals from assisting our troops or if it thinks it will help intimidate a few more Congress Wooses into trying to give them a victory they can’t win on the battlefield.

Sorry to be wordy, but this really galls me!

"The video appears to show that, throughout that day, Marines engaged in fierce firefights and called in air strikes to level buildings -- often with no definitive idea of who was inside."

Yah, right, CNN. It was innocent women and children and a wedding party in the buildings, shooting at the Marines.

In one of the great freeps in the Florida chapter's history, we freeped on a Saturday morning in front of former senator Bob Graham's office in downtown Tampa some years ago.

Graham was in DC, but we knew that and it didn't make an iota of difference. The freep was the thing.

I can't remember specifically what we were freeping this leftist retard for, but with Graham it could have been anything and everything.

The weather was great, the signs displayed the usual creative efforts, the cars, cabs and trucks driving by gave us the thumbs up and horn toots.

Suddenly, way up between the tall buildings we saw FReeper One of the Florida Free Republic Air force zoom into sight.....circling above us for a good ten minutes or so. What a thrill!

It was towing a banner with an apropos phrase on it. We danced around, pointing upward and crying out "Da Plane, Da Plane!!"

All of Tampa proper couldn't miss that plane!

Afterward we adjourned to a nearby hash house for a bite to eat and some great freeptalk about our completed mission.

I wish Murtha's office was in Florida. You can bet your life we'd freep him but good.

If his office was on the water down here, we'd call in the Florida Free Republic Navy to assist us, too.

Not to mention the Florida Free Republic Amazon Brigade Reserves, always gorgeous, always ready to be called up and serve.

Not all American troops are military......we freepers are civilian fighters, our morale is always superb, we're always ready to hit the front lines.......and we take no prisoners.

Murtha, you cowardly traitor and filthy blot on the history of this great country, don't poke your jowly face into Florida!

Leni

His last statement that Justice will not be served until there is a conviction???

What an IDIOT, not ONE civilian was targeted intentionally, this is a political railroading and that former LtCol should know better.

"Justice won't be served unless someone an American is convicted for Haditha".

There Gary, that's what you really meant. Solis truly is an a$$. Goes to show that serving in the military doesn't always turn out for the better. Think murtha, solis, kerry...

Solis’s closing statement: “It would be difficult to say justice has been served if no one is convicted.” Doesn’t make me omfortable. WIll they find a scapegoat? How about convicting the insurgents who set up the IED? Or the villagers who gave them cover? Why our Marines? It’s war, dammit.
