LONDON - A woman joined the protectors of the Crown Jewels on Monday as one of the famed Beefeaters of the Tower of London, becoming the first female Yeoman Warder since the corps of Tower guards was created in 1485.
Moira Cameron, a Warrant Officer Class 2 who joined the army at age 20, was selected over five men who also applied for the vacancy.
"This place is magical. It's just a wonderful job and I'm very, very lucky to have it," said Cameron, 42, who spent much of her first morning on duty talking to journalists.
"You wake up in the morning and you know you're going to have a good day."
There are 35 Yeoman Warders at the Tower plus the Chief Yeoman Warder and Yeoman Gaoler.
Candidates must have been a warrant officer or senior noncommissioned officer, have served at least 22 years in the army, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines and hold the Long Service and Good Conduct medal.
It won’t be long before we have the first female Beefeater wearing a burka.
Seriously, congratulations to Warrant Officer Cameron. I've no doubt she'll uphold the proud tradition of the Yeoman Warders just fine.
But I digress.
I say this woman is like a "fox guarding the hen house".
After all, how can a woman be trusted with guarding the family jewels?
A woman protecting the crown jewels ?

Nice. I heard on TV that they get a free apartment in the tower as well. Great retirement job. Congrats to the lady.
Hey snugs, what say you....LOL
‘No, you’re not lucky, Ma’am. You’re just a tool on the bench of political corruption.’
After 22 years of military service? She got the job because she’s qualified, nothing more.
“No, you’re not lucky, Ma’am. You’re just a tool on the bench of political corruption.”
Eh? Explain...
That's always possible. It depends on whether the standards for acquiring the job are still the same. But it could very well be that this woman is extremely well-qualified, and earned the position based on her ability.
I was there earlier this summer. The Tower was my favorite place in London and the Beefeater who did our tour was wonderful, so much better than the tacky tour guides who infest many other attractions.
Some people, apparently, feel the need to trash this woman because of their own insecurities. I’ll just congratulate her on her achievement. 22 years in the service is no small deal and someone who’s gone through that deserves our respect, not cheap insults with no evidence to back them up.
Thought you might want to see this.
so silly
Why that’s mighty stylish. I wonder what Winston Churchill would say?
To be precise, she’s a yeowoman. Which happens to sound like a way that Rocky Balboa addresses Adrian when he’s in an insolent mood.
but some strident women do not have to crash every tradition
unless they have something to prove
it would be nice to preserve some traditions...especially innocuous ones like the fact that beefeaters have always been male
no woman in the world is being held back by that fact.
it’s ridiculous that some gals feel like destroying anything all male and speaking of insecurities, that says more about their’s than our’s
“I must validate myself by doing man things or competing with men”
I have watched this absurd progression for the last 40 years.
Doing man things doesn’t do squat really for women except occasionally enhance their practical employment opportunities and more often than not they simply lower the bar for them physically as in the military and “fireperson” trades
this sort of political social engineering flying in the face of centuries of tradition or forsaking legitimate physical concerns is an indulgence of soft decaying societies...not something to be celebrated....but rather lamented as the cancer of political correctness marches on in the west.
