Maintenance workers investigating a strange smell Wednesday morning discovered a dead man deep in a heating vent at Russian Jack Elementary, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

The body was identified later in the afternoon as Michael Nix, 21, who had been missing since he left his apartment near the school on Aug. 24.

"He said he was going to get something from his car, and he never came back," said his sister, Sasha Loyd.

Nix was living with his girlfriend on East 20th Avenue. He'd been drinking that night, his sister said. An alcohol container was found with the body, said police spokesman Paul Honeman.

Please don’t misunderstand, I don’t think the deaths are funny, I just thought what the widow said was funny. Now, the shooting a moose in downtown Fairbanks, the aluminum foil on the windows (I get why it’s there, but it still cracks me up!) the $6.00 bags of Cheetos on the highway, that stuff I find funny. But not the deaths (but if I could pick the place to die, somewhere northwest of Fairbanks is where I’d want to do it. In a typically Alaskan way, of course!)

the aluminum foil on the windows

That was mostly during the Pipeline days. A ton of new people in town with no intent to adapt. We have had eleven grizzlies shot near Fairbanks this year, which is a new thing. Last year a couple went through my yard but went on a couple miles before being disposed of. I never saw them which is fine with me, the black bear was enough.

The school is located on the South end of Russian Jack Park.

The park has a colorful history.

Jacob Marunenko, a Russian immigrant who arrived in 1915 homesteaded the location of the park in the early 1930’s. He became known as Jake Marchin or “Russian Jack”. During World War II, the army needed expansion areas and took the land.

The homestead reverted back to the federal government control. Later in 1948 it was given to the city with intent to be a park. In the interim, the area of the greenhouse and golf course became a minimum security prison farm for APD housing inmates who committed minor offences involving alcohol.

The “Prison Farm” was known for its vegetables, particularly cabbages and potatoes grown there until the early 60’s. It was also the city’s water source in case of an emergency. With demands for recreation growing the prison farm was moved in 1968 and is now known as the Clithrow Center.

People are complaining because they didn't send the kids home while they were recovering the body.

Personally, the little kiddies should have watched the recovery and told "this what happens when you go though life drunk and stupid"

Only half kidding

We visited Fairbanks about 2 years ago in January. Things do move much slower there. We actually considered moving up there, but we would have been located in Delta Junction. Not much happens there from what I understand. About all the excitement of watching grass grow.

Hope the kids return the grandson at least for a perior of time. I know that has to be hard. My parents live 3 states away. Takes a good day to get there if I drive by myself with the two kids. I have taken to driving at night because they sleep and don’t need to be fed or go to the bathroom. I can make it in just under 10 hours. Louisiana is much like Fairbanks except without the snow.

LOL! Haven't seen any of those loony faker trolls around here for awhile. They ALWAYS claim to be a near relative or friend of the late unlamented Darwin Award candidate . . . and they never seem to able to spell or write a simple declarative English sentence.

It got to where about ten of us were on the alert any time there was an unusual death, and we'd all ping each other when the Death Troll showed up.

I wonder what made him go there.

Wasn't in use but the grease was still hot. Couldn't have been long after closing time.

He is no longer with us.
