'Police Match Madeleine DNA To Hire Car'

Portuguese police say they have found firm DNA evidence that the body of Madeleine McCann was in the boot of the family's hire car five weeks after she went missing, sources have told Sky News.

Kate McCann leaves PortimaoSky crime correspondent Martin Brunt, speaking from Portimao, said police were "adamant" they had found the most "damning" evidence yet implicating either one or both of the McCanns in their daughter's death.

The evidence came in blood samples returned from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham.

"Police say it is the most damning evidence that has been returned by the tests," Brunt said.

"It shows, as far as they are concerned, the presence of Madeleine's body in the car five weeks after she disappeared."

He continued: "The evidence suggests very strongly that it was not that her DNA had been transferred from clothing or from a cuddly toy.

"The allegation is that the DNA shows a full match of 99%. According to police, it shows the presence of Madeleine's body in the boot of the family's hire car five weeks after she disappeared."

I don’t believe this for one moment. When would the McCann’s have had time to transport a dead body in a foreign land to some hideaway place? What vehicle would they have driven to take the kid away to hide her? Did they use a rent-a-car the day of the child’s disappearance? Did they use their own vehicle and did it have any DNA or blood in it? Doesn’t sound like any other car with blood in it the day of the disappearance has been tested or spoken of by anyone.

Where would the McCann’s have taken the body? They are in a foreign land. Why would they kill their own kid? There are 3 of them. So they just arbitrarily decided to bump off their oldest girl? If they allegedly sedated their kids, were any sedatives found by anyone? Was it checked for? Did either of the other two children show any signs of sedation? Did they wake up right away when the McCann’s discovered Madeleine was gone, or were they groggy and hung over from being sedated also? And who would ever be sedating their 3 kids anyway? Is there any track record of them ever doing anything like this before? As doctors, do you really think they would be sedating their own children? How much mileage was on the spedometer of the car rental? Why did they rent it and where did they say they went? Do they have witnesses as to where they went in the rental car? Where are the police answers to all of these questions?

I believe the Portuguese police wanted the McCann family out of Portugal. It was bad PR for them, and bad for the tourist trade which had already taken a dive because of this incident. The McCann’s were being adamant about not wanting to leave Portugal without Madeleine. This is the trumped up charge by the police to get the onus off of themselves for their lousy investigation, and to get the McCann’s out of Portugal. It worked, didn’t it. Now, just like Beth Holloway, they lose the ability to ever find out the truth as to what happened to their daughter. Beth Holloway had the same rotten treatment by a foreign gov’t that just wanted her out of their hair the same as in this case. Must not affect the tourist trade. Now the McCanns are back in Britain, far away from the scene of the crime, and have no ability to keep the investigation alive. The Portuguese got rid of them back to their own country, and the reason they let them go back was because that’s what they wanted all the time, to get them out of Portugal. You watch, the case will now miraculously just fade away, leaving the suspicions now on the McCann’s heads, and the police can now just forget about having to do anything more, because they didn’t want to do anything more. The McCann’s lose.

Moral of story. Don’t expect any help in a foreign country if you have kids. If I had small kids, I wouldn’t take them anywhere until they were young adults. But then of course, Natalie Holloway was a young adult. I guess one must be hyper vigilant if in a foreign country, and never leave your children out of your sight. Better yet, just travel the USA.

I’m not convinced either. How do they know the DNA was transfered five weeks AFTER the abduction?

Rental records for the vehicle show the Mc Canns rented the vehicle 25 days *after* they reported Madeleine missing. How could the scenario you posit then occur, as the car wasn't in the posession of the Mc Canns?

Clothing, luggage, soft toys can all retain DNA. Placing them in the trunk of a vehicle could result in major transference to the carpet in the trunk. Imagine a dry blood splatter flaking off plastic or leather luggage. Kids do bleed under normal, benign circumstances.

Why are you so defensive of the police in this matter?

Because everyone is an armchair detective with 20/20 hindsight.

The local police in this matter may not have been up to the high standards of FBI special agents, but they haven't done a bad job considering the media pressure and the bizarre nature of this case.

This just hit the press. It is a pretty good summary of the criticisms that I have seen over the past few months.

Police made errors in Maddy McCann case

The Portuguese police have faced a series of allegations of incompetence over their handling of Madeleine's disappearance.

One former police officer described the McCann apartment as the "worst preserved crime scene" he had ever witnessed.

She went missing on a Thursday night - most of the departing guests needed to leave on Sunday to be back at work on Monday. That's a window of 48 hours.

Actually from my experience of holidays in Spain and Greece and I would assume Portugal is the same most departures are mid week or Saturday/Sunday and most holidays last 14 days. In peak holiday period there are often daily departures to each resort and guests coming and going each day of the week. I have often had to book my holiday Tuesday to Tuesday or Thursday to Thursday.

I am not a fan of the Sun but I have to agree with you on its investigating yes it does have tabloid trash with so called celebrities etc but it also does do a lot good for the ordinary working man or woman with scams it uncovers.

I have always found Greece children friendly having said that I would not leave them unattended or at anything that was not recommended by the tour operator I booked the holiday through

The other night Mark Fuhrman stated that the Portugese police have been doing an excellent, comprehensive and methodical job in their investigation.

Mark generally knows what he's talking about.

I'm sure they have even more evidence that is not being revealed at this time. This is standard procedure for LE the world over as they build a case.

"I wonder who was renting the car at the time she disappeared since the DNA does not have a date stamp on it?"

Me too.

Long ago, here in Arkansas, a 12 year old girl was snatched off the street in plain view of people. She was found dead in a pond.

People described a Silver Car, and after searching desperately for the silver car, it was traced back to a Rental Car.

The pervert had taken a plane to Arkansas with only one purpose in mind. He rented the car at the Airport. Then, he returned the silver rental car and flew back home.

They got him.

One former police officer described the McCann apartment as the "worst preserved crime scene" he had ever witnessed.

Again, no one knew it was a crime scene until later.

This is not JonBenet Ramsey, where police arrived to find the strangled corpse of a child.

The police here arrived to find that a child was missing from an unlocked hotel room and that her two siblings were present and unharmed.

There was no reason to immediately assume that a crime had been committed and every reason to assume that a three year old opened an unlocked door and wandered off.

You seem to be the only one who believes it was appropriate to assume one or the other.

One of the guests said she saw a man carrying a child in pajamas. Her description of the pajamas was similar to those Madeleine had been wearing. So I think it is a stretch to say there was “every reason” to believe she had wandered off.

"Selfish, yes, but not monsters."

This is just my humble opinion, but hiding and then carrying around the body of your beautiful child, and then pleading with the world (including The Pope) to find your beautiful child, then disposing of the body like it was yesterday's garbage is just a wee bit more monsterous than it is selfish. That is if, and it is a big IF, they actually did what the authorities are saying that they did.

Couldn't there be cross contamination??

If they had an object of her's that they took with them like a favorite toy, blanket, etc, it might still have her DNA onit. I know after my mom passed away there were items that she owned that I have in my possession now.

How about another scenario?

The body was intact for 25 days. Then, when they decide to move it, they cut it up?

The guest who claims to have seen a man carrying a child in a blanket is one of the McCanns’ friends who dined with them that night. Pretty fishy.
