Israeli FM Seeks Olmert's Resignation

Israel's popular foreign minister called Wednesday on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign _ positioning herself to replace him and dealing the toughest blow yet to his efforts to stay in power after a scathing report on his performance in the war in Lebanon.

Olmert said he does not plan to resign, despite the growing number of allies deserting him.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni became the highest-ranking official to call for Olmert's ouster, telling him in a meeting that he had lost the public's support and setting herself up to become Israel's second female prime minister, after the legendary Golda Meir.

"I told him that resignation would be the right thing for him to do," Livni told reporters. She had been conspicuously silent since the report on last summer's war came out Monday.

A relative political newcomer and a former officer in the Mossad spy agency, Livni is Kadima's most popular politician. The daughter of an underground fighter in Israel's war for independence, she has quickly risen in politics in recent years and appears to be Kadima's best hope of retaining power.

Livni, 48, presents a stark contrast to Olmert. Perhaps reflecting her history as a young Mossad agent in the 1980s, Livni measures her words and maintains a calm exterior, while Olmert enthusiastically pumps hands and claps backs while letting fly with sometimes costly inexact phrases...

Kadima never should have existed in the first place. Livni may be a good person, or she may not. But Kadima has been a total disaster, far worse than an unadulterated Labor Party that could have been thrown out of office.

I suspect that Sharon had a small stroke before the big one. Almost everything he did during his last term in office was destructive, but his worse offense was to found Kadima and prepare the ground for the likes of Olmert to follow him.

Saving Kadima is not what Israel needs.

Gee, 'ya think? Is THAT what a 3% public approval rating means? Damn, the things that just slip by you....

Let's juxtapose these 2 statements:

"I told him that resignation would be the right thing for him to do," Livni told reporters.

Israel's popular foreign minister called Wednesday on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign _ positioning herself to replace him...

No self-interest there at all - "...the right thing for him to do...."

BS - Livni is an opportunistic scumbag who will be an even worse disaster for Israel. The entire Kadima Party - if they had any courage at all between them - should have resigned within a week or 2 of the end of that disaster in Lebanon last summer, and called for new elections. THAT would have been "the right thing to do."

Olmerde and his whole cabinet need to GTFO NOW! Put some real Israelis with big brass ones in charge instead of Tweedledee-let’s-give-away-the-farm-and-maybe-they’ll-be-nice-to-us! Tzipi needs to go, she’s just trying to opportunistically position herself for post-Olmerde. Clean house the way Regan did when he took over from Carter in January 1981.

"Following the Yom Kippur War, Meir's government was distracted by internal squabbles among the governing coalition and had to face serious questions over strategic misjudgments as well as the general lack of leadership that resulted in inadequate preparedness at the beginning of the Yom Kippur War. On April 11, 1974, Golda Meir resigned as prime minister, and she was succeeded by Yitzhak Rabin on June 3, 1974."
