Tancredo Criticizes New Plan Allowing Mexican Trucks Into U.S.

Cites Recent Incidents in Mexico as Cause for Concern with Permissive New Cross-Border Trucking Policy

( WASHINGTON, D.C. ) – Representative Tom Tancredo (R-Littleton) today criticized the new Bush Administration policy allowing Mexican trucks broad access to roadways. The plan, announced recently by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), allows Mexican trucking to carry goods into the rather than transferring cross-border shipments to American trucks at the border.

“Six years after 9/11 our borders still haven’t been secured,” said Tancredo, “And I fear that this new Bush Administration trucking gamble will only exacerbate that problem.”

Tancredo cited recent news reports of a terrorist attack on oil pipelines in Veracruz and a gruesome highway explosion in Piedras Negras (near the U.S. border) involving a truck loaded with dynamite in panning the risky new USDOT plan. The Piedras Negras incident alone left 34 people dead and another 150 wounded.

“These incidents raise serious concerns about the wisdom of allowing Mexican trucks expanded access to highways and communities,” said Tancredo.

“I hope the administration will shut this pilot program down,” said Tancredo, “After all, the next time this happens it could be on the side of the border.”

Tancredo will never be president!!!!@!

There, now that that's out of the way, perhaps we can address the subject of the article.

Tancredo is right, but I don’t think he has a prayer’s chance of realizing anything good out of his comments. This administration just doesn’t speak the same language

While I would try to live by Mexico’s rules while in Mexico, I have seen millions of examples of how Mexican citizens adhere to our rules when they pass into the U.S. This doesn’t bode well when the issue is 50 to 100 tons of freight traveling at heaven only knows what speed, with equipment that may or may not be in sound operating condition.

There also issues of trucker displacement in the United States. Although unions are involved, I DO NOT want to see another industry gutted in the interest of employing foreign nationals.

There are a lot of drivers who have invested in rigs across this nation, that have obligations to meet. They come first in this U.S. Citizen’s ideal pecking order (as it relates to trucking).

It is nice Tancredo has finally joined Duncan Hunter who long ago has been dealing with this issue and putting forth legislation. Tom follows Hunter’s leads.
I like leaders, not followers in a person to be President.

According to what I have read this free flow of truck traffic between Canada/USA/Mexico is part of a legal treaty between the countries - and therefore the law.

Therefore it had to have been agreed to by the Senate and signed by the President.

When did all this happen?? and who were the big players??

Actually, I warned everyone on this forum months ago that this was going to happen. My wife’s publication covers a variety of government/industry conferences, and she gets the latest information from the Commerce Department the moment it becomes public. I passed on this bit of NAFTA goodness to other Freepers and the cranks and kooks went berserk, since I inferred that their precious W would, OMG, do something so unAmerican.

They’ve since changed their tune, but, unfortunately, so many really good people have fled FR since then...

Anyway, there’s at least SEVENTEEN more supplemental agreements which have been added on to the original NAFTA, all within the past five years. This truck matter was only the first. You’ll see what the rest are soon enough.
