The U.S. Senate has dealt a likely death blow to the Bush administration plans to give Mexican long-haul trucking rigs free access to United States roads and highways.
A bi-partisan majority voted 74-24 tonight to pass an amendment offered by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., to remove funding from the Fiscal Year 2008 Department of Transportation appropriations bill for the Department of Transportation Mexican trucking demonstration project.
Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Penn., joined Dorgan as a co-sponsor of his amendment.
"Tonight, commerce for a change did not trump safety," Dorgan said in a news release issued after the vote.

YEP!! I am all for anything that stops the flow—trucks, humans—you name it. PERIOD. Any welcome was worn out long, long ago. I just wish they would do something to stop the anchor babies—immediately.
I hate chiding the GOP like this but if the GOP wanted to deal the DNC a serious blow by rattling it’s union donors it could have by simply doing a Yay vote.
Then all they had to do was point out that the democrats supported it in the provision in the immigration bill.
If the GOP really wants to destroy the DNC all they have to do is talk about aliens and unions. Then observe as the snake devours itself.
All pubs! The fools! They care about money more than safety on our highways, not too mention terrorist trucking. It is the stupid party. We got saved by the dems on this one.
Yes, I will too. Praise them when they do the right thing, give’m hell when they don’t.
. It will be interesting to see Bush’s reaction to this
He has a track record of somehow ignoring certain laws and doing what he pleases
He may try to claim this violates a treaty
And Perry will be angry as what good are two half mile wide French owned, south-north toll roads without Mexican 18 wheelers, lol. Trans Texas Corridor!!
We shouldn’t cheer too fast. Knowing Bush, he’ll make an end run within a week to try another angle at getting his beloved program through.
This is about as dumb as nixing the Dubai Ports deal.
“This is about as dumb as nixing the Dubai Ports deal.”
Kindly elucidate please.
You think it is dumb to prevent Mexican trucks from crossing the country?
I haven’t read this thread so don’t know what comments have been made but Texas cities, ranchers and farmers are up in arms about having their acreage divided by a French owned toll road. They won’t be able to cross from one side to the other!!
A road that is eventually expected to start way down in Mexico and end up in Canada. The Chinese have already been buying ‘ports’ in those countries.
This is all tied together with allowing other countries trucks free access to our country, long term in the making as it may be.
Perhaps I have misunderstood your comment!
Thanks for the idea. I just emailed Senator Dorgan to thank him, too.
I'm not sure what you are getting at. My observations, from the roads, and streets inside the 25 mile zone the Mexican trucks have been operating in for the past dozen plus years.
Many of what they call trucks resemble what you'd find in a junk yard in this country, tires so bald, cords are exposed, air brake systems with constant air leaks, wheels, brake shoes, and drums coated with oil, and dirt from leaking seals, engines slobbering oil all over the road.
We are told that the trucks crossing out of the 25 mile zone will be in good condition, that sounds good, but that's not how things work with Mexicans, they will try anything they think they can get away with, and then some.
What's to prevent the junk from venturing beyond the 25 mile limit? The same thing that prevents illegals from jumping the border?
Repubs apparently voted no because they want a more expansive bill and they know this will go all the way to the Supreme Court. We already have BILLS which would prohibit this and Resolutions but they have not been funded or supported by the Democrats. This is election year hype - should we be thankful for a crumb from the crummy?
Did anyone take the time - hours - to read this entire resolution? One issue the Repubs want is for all cargo including meat, vegetables, etc. to be inspected. Govt agency in charge says they will only inspect 1%. There is more than just trucks killing us on the highway.
The Dems would have supported the measure if Bush was a Dem. (He isn’t, is he?)
It amazes me that the Free World’s best hope has so many elected leaders that are scum, corrupt and/or incompetent.
Cintra is Spanish.
(psst! It’s a Spanish owned toll road!) :)
Globalism ping!
This is really disgusting and frustrating. Look at post 12.
AAAARRRGH!
I suppose you’re also a member of the Harriet Miers glee club.
