I posted this on another thread but it fits here too:
What U.S. truckers in their right mind would WANT to transport goods to their destination in Mexico? It would take them YEARS to get to their drop-off point. First they would have to play dodge-em with all the 1950s vintage cars that inhabit the roadways of Mexico. And all the break-downs associated with old cars. Or the farm vehicles that go 1 mile an hour on a good day. Plus another good chunk of Mexicans drive like they are drunk, which may very well be true. Erratic driving is the norm. Then of course, there will be the set-up robberies of our trucks, with the help of the Federales to make it easier, with phony traffic stops.
Meanwhile, back here in the good old USA, we will have Mexican drivers going to their destination points in our country who dont know our highways, the rules of the road only a bit, who may imbibe drugs or drink on whim, who could be terrorists, delivering bomb payloads instead of goods, and taking who knows what drugs or contraband back and forth over the border. While putting U.S. truckers out of business. Such a good deal for us, si senor?
From post #12: The two aggravating things about this amendment are: First, the list of co-sponors, and Second, the list of Senators voting NAY or not voting: [ALL REPUBLICANS].BumPing! From post #33: This is election year hype - should we be thankful for a crumb from the crummy?
From post #34: One issue the Repubs want is for all cargo including meat, vegetables, etc. to be inspected. Govt agency in charge says they will only inspect 1%. There is more than just trucks killing us on the highway.
It was a Democratic Congress that shot down the immigration bill.
Now, they are the ones that want to make sure Americans are safe on the road and our sovereignty is not violated.
What the eff am I missing here? What are the pubbies about anymore?
One of the 24 dolts is Richard Lugar, one of my senators, a REPUBLICAN. He will here from the voters in my household immediately. Democrat Evan Bayh will get a “THANK YOU” from us.
It’s the NAU. Plain and simple.
$$$$$$$$$$ and the NAU. So are the Democrats....this is just an appearance that they aren't. If the Senate were seriously against selling out America, they would make a law overturning their previous law: NAFTA is not a treaty, it's a law.
Note that the House vote was 234-200 and the Senate vote was 61-38. A treaty requires no House concurrence but does require the concurrence of 2/3s of the Senators "present." [U. S. Constitution - Article II; Section 2]. Two-thirds of the Senate present for the NAFTA vote did not concur. The Bill was passed but no treaty was authorized.NAFTA is not a treaty.
"As law but not treaty, NAFTA can be altered or repealed with the simple passage of another law. So, when a Congress critter says that their hands are tied, that they are "bound" by NAFTA, it's likely a disingenuous argument. However, in the case that they are speaking out of ignorance, that they actually believe that NAFTA is a not easily altered treaty, then they should be reminded that NAFTA is simply law and that they have the power to create or change laws."

Martinez (R-FL) voted against.
Republican opposition. Democratic support. The Republican’s still think thier friends in big business are more important than their grass roots voters that oppose open borders with Mexico.
Mexican trucks have been crossing the US to reach Canada for over a decade.
It amazes me that the Free Worlds best hope has so many elected leaders that are scum, corrupt and/or incompetent.
::::::
We, the people, must blame ourselves for letting the condition get out of control. Time to fix our mistakes in the 2008 election.
Don’t thank the Democrats. They weren’t voting for safety, they were voting to ensure jobs for union employees, who get to unload all the goods from the mexican trucks at the border and re-load them into american trucks.
It’s a shame that we can’t find out if there is a safety issue, because republicans refuse to allow a demonstration program.
It’s hard to see what part of small-government conservatism is being advanced here.
Dick is my senator too.
I hang my head in shame..
I swear, when he thinks about Mexico, it seems to flip a toggle switch in President Bush’s brain, and his normal common sense is turned off.
.
GW had a Mexican illegal alien nanny
A family tradition it seems
Check out Jeb in college in Mexico City and bring his intended to Texas to get married
The Bush family has never been Conservative on many things - esp. in personal and business matters they pick and choose
Politicians and journalists and professors and tycoons live in another world with flexible rules and ethics
“I’m the decider....”
“Spanish” as in Spain.
Yes, I misspoke on the ‘French’. Cintra-Zachry is from Madrid, Spain.
Usually when we say ‘spanish’ we automatically think of Mexico and south America.
Snarlin’ Arlen constituents are still big union up here. I bet he got a call (or two) from his Teamster buds...
But not the ‘long haul’ 18 wheelers - I don’t think. I live in South Texas and the small Mexican trucks are all over even thought they are not supposed to go beyond a set number of miles from the border.
