A total of three flights have been redirected to Shannon Airport after alleged air rage incidents.

A number of people are in custody.

Two people were arrested following the first alleged air rage incident on board a transatlantic jet this afternoon. Advertisement

Martinair flight 621 was forced to divert to Shannon where it landed safely at 3.40pm.

There were 233 passengers on board the aircraft which was en route from Amsterdam to Cuba.

Gardaí were waiting at Shannon when the plane landed and two people, a man and a woman, believed to be from Ukraine were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

They are being held at Shannon Garda Station and are expected to be brought before a district court sitting tomorrow morning on public order offences.

That flight was cleared for take-off before 6pm this evening to continue its flight to Cuba.

The second alleged air rage incident occurred on a Delta Airlines flight from Istanbul to JFK.

The flight was diverted to Shannon where it landed at around 6.30pm this evening.

Gardaí arrested a man who is believed to be an Iranian national.

The 197 passengers from that flight will be staying overnight in local hotels.

In the third flight diversion, a Thomas Cook flight from Manchester to Toronto was two hours into its flight across the Atlantic this evening when cabin crew became concerned about the actions of a passenger.

There was no specific incident but the captain decided for security reasons to divert to Shannon.

Arrangements were being made to find a replacement crew to resume the flight.

Gardaí interviewed the man and are satisfied he did not pose a threat.

Tensions high? Nerves on edge? No, I think at least two of these will ultimately be found to be connected and coordinated.

They are trying to rub the first terror event in our faces. The religious/ideological identification of these four persons may not be known, and so not reportable, at this time.

Want to put some money on it? I don’t think it is “being on edge” by flight crews but flaunting by a non-Hindu, but possibly Baptist religious sect.

you may be right. Istanbul, Manchester, Toronto, New York and Amsterdam all have high ROP populations. Not sure about Havana?

For the last time, stop serving duty-free booze on the flights.

With a few notable exceptions (schizos off their meds) “air ragers” turn out to be obstreperous drunks.

How mysterious is that?

I sincerely doubt any muslim is idiot enough to try to dhimmify Ireland. Although it would make for a hilarious reality show.

I used to be extravagantly afraid of flying. Just before our first flight to Germany I decided to cure myself by getting good and soused. I waited until they called my gate then I asked the bar wench to line up 4 screwdrivers. I knocked them back in about 2 minutes and made my way to the plane.

By the time it hit me I was already in my seat. I ordered two more on the plane and soon blacked out. I was in Frankfurt before I knew it.

So not all flying drunks are loudmouthed fools. Some of us simply want to be unconscious.

I'm with you buddy. Back in the day, before the birth of the "virtual strip search" at airports today, I always had a sportcoat pocketful of bottled shooters...bourbon....I was a very peaceful passenger.

I don't fly anymore.

You're drinking duty-free booze on your flights? I order it in the shops at the terminal and its delivered to me on the plane just before landing, but I sure as heck can't drink it on the plane.
When I used to drink while flying, it was always the little exorbitantly priced 'flight' bottles.

'Fraid the duty free stuff doesn't get opened until I am back in the shack.

I don't fly anymore.

My last plane ride was February 2001 and it wouldn't cross my mind to get on a plane ever again.

My buddy is on this flight!

He wrote us yesterday via BB telling us he was being diverted due to a "Medical Emergency". He said he saw someone being handcuffed and escorted off the plane.

I basically told him there are far worse places to be stranded and that God was smiling on him that he landed in Ireland. Then I sent him a list of fine Irish whiskies to go out and try or buy.

They are flying out today.

Ping for an update:

Looks like 1066Ad wins the "pool" for guessing it was a "smoking fit" (lol! Or not...) No one on the flight is laughing about it.

Here's an update (live report from a passenger on the Istanbul flight) from within the past hour:

5:36AM Eastern - "Yeap, there are plenty of rumors among passengers. They are saying he didn't speak English nor Turkish, and they couldn't communicate with him. He went back and forth, and ended up in business class, were he didn't belong. Supposedly he wanted to smoke. The marshalls injected some kind of tranquilizer. They kept a whole bunch of people passports overnight, probably for background checks. We are the airport waiting for our new flight to NY, leaving at 11:30 AM (EST + 5 hrs). NY to FLL is at 4:20 PM EST, so hope to be home by 8 PM. I am looking forward to be AT WORK !!! Believe or not !!"

6:09AM Eastern - "The guy that caused the whole thing is going back on the same plane. He looks like he is retarded, badly! Can't believe they are putting him on the same plane again!!! They need to sedate him and tie him down!! Don't want to land anywhere else."

6:26AM Eastern - Just boarded...

Have a safe flight, amigo!

Nice. So he got a free night in Ireland out of the deal? I wouldn’t mind. :)

I use bring my own alcohol if I traveled Coach because it was too expensive to buy on board. Either that or I was a good drunk way back then. :-)

Hijack an Amsterdam to Cuba flight and you can easily divert to hit a target on the East coast of the U.S.

That would be a flight that the U.S. would find difficult to police (don’t want our air marshals in Cuba, limiting their ability to fly on such a flight).

Last year I was flying out of Manchester England back to the US. I got pulled out of line because the detector beeped as I passed through. A female agent accompanied by two male agents took me over to the side and proceeded to pat me down. I would have to say they were all very polite and almost apologetic. However it was quite a thorough search and immediately afterward I smiled and looked at them and asked them if anyone needed a cigarette now...heehee. They chuckled ...apologized again...I told them I would rather they be cautious and I was fine thank you. Morale of story...never wear an underwire bra on a flight ...grins.
