Just saw this on the 10:00 p.m. News. I guess I shouldn't be surprised - this is the Peoples' Republik of Oregon :-(

Hi folks, don’t know if you’ve seen or heard about this. The ODFW is talking about euthanizing the deer. KGW-TV is being bombarded with people calling in about this.

Is this a residential neighborhood, and what does the deer smell like?

After receiving an anonymous tip that the family has been illegally keeping a wild animal as a pet

Someone is a jerk.

This is asinine...Let the family keep their pets. Maybe they shouldn’t allow them to breed them but the 2 deer should be able to stay with the family. Whoever ratted them out should be ashamed to have done so. Before they would get my pets I would find a way to hide them. Why is it illegal to have deer as pets anyway?

Honest to God, some public officials just aren’t qualified...

...to be a human being.

“...to seize Snowball and Bucky, Snowball’s son.”

Deer don’t have “sons.”

Don VandeBergh, a state wildlife official at the scene, cited health and disease issues and said "the deer belong to everybody in the state of Oregon, not just a few people."

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/09/molalla_family_refuse_to_surre.html

Well, since "everybody" didn't step up to the plate to take care of the deer, I can't see why it's a problem for it to remain in the care of the people who spent their time and money on it. Had they called Mr VandeBergh when it was found, Snowball most likely would have been put down.

We had a pet screech owl when I was a kid, for the same reason these people had the pet deer. Our little screech owl was born with a club foot and couldn’t hold onto a branch (my brother found him under a tree when the owl was a fledge). My parents cautioned us not to tell people about the owl since he would be taken from us. I have read that screech owls live about 3 years in the wild, but he lived 17 years with my parents, and was happy the whole time. Perhaps he wasn’t “free” but he was (a) alive, (b) well fed, and (c) an affectionate and valued member of our family.

It’s not “big government” that I hate; it’s stupid government. But it seems inevitable that big government must be stupid. It can only go by predetermined rules, no matter how badly they fit the actual situation.

Boy, we’ve sure got our priorities straight in this country, don’t we? Here demons from Hell are trying to wipe all of us out and we’re most worried about Bambi’s social life.

Deer are the most natural prey animal in the world; they were never intended to serve anybody as pets nor is there any reasonable way to keep them as pets. In areas in which they’re not being preyed on, they quickly overpopulate and come to a point at which most of them start either dying of starvation or getting run over by vehicles.

People shouldn’t harbor wild animals. They should stick with tame, gentle, government-approved pets. Like pit bulls.

Are they really thinking of euthanasing her? I thought Oregon was just into euthanasing vulnerable people.

My daughter went through a similar incident here in NC.

She found an abandoned fawn ( she’s an animal control officer and has several wildlife licenses) and took it home, lives on 10 acres.
She called the NC wildlife folks. They said because of overcrowding they would pick up the fawn and destroy it.
She called some state officials raising hell.
Wildlife called back and ‘claimed’ they would find a home for the fawn.

She told them ,next time she gets one they won’t find out about it.

Most of these stupid laws, esp the zero tolerance ones are put there to absolve the official of having to make a decision. The law does it for them.’
They can’t make the wrong one because ‘it’s the law.
What we end up with is zero common sense.
