(Paul v Clinton in Wall Street Journal) For Clinton, 2000 Fund-Raising Controversy Lingers

For Clinton, 2000 Fund-Raising Controversy Lingers Ex-Supporter Paul Stays on the Attack With Suit, Claims By JOHN R. EMSHWILLER September 14, 2007; Page A7

LOS ANGELES -- As Sen. Hillary Clinton grapples with the burgeoning scandal surrounding disgraced fund-raiser Norman Hsu, she can't quite shake a fund-raising controversy from her 2000 Senate campaign.

Mrs. Clinton's entanglement with a thrice-convicted felon named Peter Paul is proof of how long campaign-finance problems can haunt a public official. Mr. Paul became a problem for Mrs. Clinton when his criminal past became public shortly after he helped organize and finance a gala Hollywood fund-raiser for her in August 2000.

• The Issue: A fund-raising scandal from 2000 continues to dog Hillary Clinton. • Sound Familiar? The entanglement with Peter Paul foreshadows events involving fund-raiser Norman Hsu. • What's Next: A court is to decide if Mrs. Clinton is reinstated as a defendant in the long legal battle with Mr. Paul.Rather than drift away, Mr. Paul has been on the attack against Mrs. Clinton ever since. In a lawsuit in California state court that has been grinding along for years, Mr. Paul accuses Mrs. Clinton and former President Bill Clinton of deceiving him into spending well over $1 million on the fund-raiser for her Senate campaign. Mr. Paul contends the Clintons obtained the money by falsely promising that Mr. Clinton would become Mr. Paul's business associate after leaving the White House in January 2001. Mr. Paul also maintains that Mrs. Clinton and her campaign violated federal election law in connection with the fund-raiser.

I met in Los Angeles a few months ago with John Emshwiller and told him the story. His first comment was to ask why no one has written about this. I had some ideas — 1) it is a complicated story, 2) many reporters want Hillary to win, and 3) many eidtors and reporters are afraid of her.

Finally, we have a reporter in the mainsteam media that is telling the voters that Hillary is soon going to be under oath and that this case is going to court.

Now -— Rush and Drudge, start talking about this.

re: Their attorney, David Kendall, says there was never any business arrangement discussed or contemplated between Mr. Paul and Mr. Clinton.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What a lying weasel SOB. If Paul was a horrible felon, if he gave no money, if there was no business relationship, why would the President of the United States invite him to meet him as AF-1 landed in Los Angeles on Sept. 22, 2000? For what possible purpose?

It’s a start, but it’s still on page A7.

OTOH, 14 months is a lifetime in politics.

Mr. Paul became a problem for Mrs. Clinton when his criminal past became public

WRONG

Mr. Paul became a problem for Mrs. Clinton when it was revealed that she was an active participant in organizing the $1.6 Million event for her benefit.

re: He also claims he was asked to lie about his role in the Hollywood fund-raiser by Edward Rendell, then chairman of the Democratic National Committee and now governor of Pennsylvania. Gov. Rendell, who isn't a defendant in the lawsuit, didn't know about Mr. Paul's felonies until the Post reported on them and never asked Mr. Paul to lie, says a spokesman.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Rendell, you lying SOB. Rendell never declared a $100,000 contribution made by Peter on June 8, 2000 - a fundraiser for which he paid at the Beverly Hills Hotel for Al Gore. The hotel cost $80,000, and Olivia Newton-John charged $20,000 for two songs. Rendell never reported a $150K stock pledge. After Aaron Tonken was indicted in California for ripping off charities, he was wearing a government wire in a conversation with Rendell. Rendell tried to bribe him with a 100K per year job in Pennsylvania. Why didn't the Justice Dept do something about that?

Here is the callsheet two days after the Aug. 12 event. Rendell called in an emergency to tell Peter that Lloyd Grove would be coming out with a story the next day. Peter should just play along and say he didn't give any money. Things would eventually blow over.

Doug,

Some Republican leaders have said that they believe that Hillary would be easier to defeat (because of her high negatives) than either of the other 2 Dems.

What is your take on that?

They don't matter because the MSM runs interference for her. Hillary is an ethically challenged person who gets away with it because no one holds her accountable. She has won by huge margins in New York, illustrating her negatives don't matter much to voters. And she can always play the Gender Card when attacked.

I hate to take the chance. She would have 5 million young women vote who never would otherwise vote. She would have millions of illegal and dead people votes. And the 2008 October Surprise could be her opponent having an unfortunate “accident.” She will do anything for power.

She has wanted to be President for a long time. She'll never be as popular or as likeable as her husband was, but she's been around politics long enough to watch what she says. Hillary has a radical agenda but her moderate personality may be enough to fool swing voters into thinking they can take a risk with her being in the White House.

Hillary and her people knew all about Peter’s past. He had been vette six times previously by the Secret Service.

Of course, she knew nothing. It was all a surprise to her! Nothing is coincidence when something happens with the Clintons.

Mr. Paul continues to produce evidence. His attorneys have submitted a recently obtained tape recording of a 2000 conversation involving Mr. Paul and Mrs. Clinton discussing plans for the fund-raiser, which they contend bolsters the argument she was involved in campaign misdeeds.
