Shaheen running for Senate in N.H.
The Boston Herald ^ | September 14, 2007

Former Democratic Gov. Jeanne Shaheen made her long-anticipated announcement Friday that she is running for the U.S. Senate.

"We have major problems facing this country, and there is an urgent need for real change in Washington," Shaheen said in a statement to supporters.

"We’ve proven in New Hampshire that we can work together to get things done. I want to take that common-sense approach to Washington and help get this country moving in the right direction," she said.

If she beats the three other Democrats already running for the nomination, Shaheen is expected to face first-term Republican Sen. John Sununu, who beat her in 2002. But Shaheen, the subject of a public draft effort and private recruitment by national party officials, already leads Sununu in polls.

This is really bad news. The only hopeful sign is that Shaheen wasn’t interested at first and is only running due to badgering by her party. If so, she is a reulctant candidate, and reluctant candidates sometimes make careless mistakes or just don’t run as hard as they could.

Jeanne Shaheen, the abortion machine.

Her chief of staff when she was governor here in NH was Judy Reardon, the former president of the NH chapter of NARRAL.

NH has been overrun with Massataxaholics from south of the border. NH went for Kerry in ‘04.

Since ‘06, we now have a CommiecRAT governor, a CommicRAT State Senate, and a CommiecRAT House. Our once solid Republican US Congressional delegation has now been infiltrated by a CommiecRAT.

Here in the State, we have had more alerts from Home School Legal Defense in one year than we did in the previous, Republican Dominated, six years.

Compulsory school attendance age has been raised from 16 to 18, increasing projuected school budgets by as much as 20%.

A helmet law will go into effect for motorcyclists, the mandatory seatbelt age was increased from 12 to 18, etc, etc, etc.

I was afraid this would happen. Shaheen is just killing Sununu in the polls. It’s crucial that the GOP keeps as many seats as possible.

Part of NH going strongly Dem is because of the influx of folks from places like NYC, NJ and of course Mass. However, this is not and cannot be the sole cause.

The Dem victory in 2006 was too large to be just the yuppies from down south.

I believe that the GOP has alienated many NH conservatives over the past few years. To me, NH has traditionally held individual liberty in high esteem right next to small government, low taxes, gun and property rights. Our constitutional amendment to prevent another Kelo vs. New London passed overwhelmingly.

For example, many people in NH are angry about illegal immigration but for four long years the GOP controlled government did nothing.

Unfortunate. Frankly, Sununu is a loser, but Shaheen would be a lot worse.

I wouldn’t mind Sheehan beating Pelosi. Someone on another board I post at said that she probably thinks that she’ll become Speaker if she beats Pelosi.

Is she a traitor also?

Somebody should ask her if she will denounce the “betray us” ad in the NYT.

Get her on record now.

Sununu and Gregg are the only non-RINOs in New England.

You might want to let that person on the other board know that it would be pretty difficult for Sheehan to replace Pelosi as Speaker of the House from her seat in the Senate.

*Sigh* I weep for New Hampshire. I figured Sununu was a good fit for the state, but they really seem to hate Republicans up there now.

The election isn’t for another 14 months, so it’s too early for hand-wringing. You’re right, if the election was held tomorrow, Sununu would lose, but the election won’t be held tomorrow.

I followed the 2002 NH Senate election closely, and Shaheen was seen as a prohibitive favorite until Sununu won the nomination, at which time it appeared that it would be a tight race, but in the last two weeks just about every pundit was counting NH as a Dem pickup. Sununu ended up winning by 4% despite outgoing GOP Senator Bob Smith (the man he defeated in the primary) pointedly refusing to campaign for Sununu or even denounce the campaign for people to write-in Smith.

And speaking of Smith, he was reelected in 1996 by 3% despite Clinton carrying the state by 10% and Smith being written off throughout the campaign and having his opponent, Dick Swett, being declared the winner on election night by all the networks.

We *cannot* give up on NH (which gave President Bush 49% in 2004, just like it would be idiotic to write off the Senate race in VA (which gave President Bush 54% in 2004). It is *not* a foregone conclusion that the Democrats will keep the Senate, and we need to fight for every seat. I still believe that the two most vulnerable Senate seats are Johnson’s in SD and Landrieu’s in LA, and if we pick those two up we are at 51 Senators.

Defeatism only sparks more defeatism until it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

That is actually true. The odds against Sununu are longer now than in 2002, but he’s not a goner.

Amen! And we need to pray for all who are facing re-election. I believe it worked for the two terms of President Bush. We were called to pray from the prophetic voices of America and boy, I sure did. I’m not quitting.

For example, many people in NH are angry about illegal immigration but for four long years the GOP controlled government did nothing.

That may well be, but for the life of me I can't see how handing power to the 'Rats (by, for example, storming off in a huff, mumbling about "damn RINOs", and "teaching them a lesson") will really fix any concerns about illegal immigration. If anything, the 'Rats will be even more pro-illegal immigration than the 'Pubs you might kick out. It makes no sense to me to fire someone you have a hissy fit over and replacing them with someone who will do far worse. I simply don't understand that kind of political "strategy". In politics, the last thing you want to do is cede ground to those who will destroy you.

Amen.

I always vote straight Republican.

I don’t look at it as voting for the lesser evil, but rather as voting for the greater good.

You’re talking about Shaheen from NH. I think the person on that other board was commenting on Cindy Sheehan running against Bela Pelosi in CA for her seat in the House.

Bingo. Sununu needs to be ruthless and tie Shaheen to the leftist moonbat rodent legislature and the moonbat freshmen Congressmembers. Ditto with Gilmore in VA with Warner and substituting the violent sociopath Webb instead of the legislature & House.
