Troubled Fund-Raiser’s Wallet Matched His Need to Please
NY Times ^ | September 16, 2007 | DON VAN NATTA Jr. and MIKE McINTIRE

Norman Hsu was desperate for invitations to glitzy Democratic Party galas in California and private political dinners in New York. But once he got in, Mr. Hsu, a 56-year-old apparel executive, seemed awkward and out of place, almost astonished to be posing for pictures with former President Bill Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and other big-name Democrats.

He gave generously, showering money on a wide array of national, state and local politicians. But he stood out in the symbiotic world of campaign finance because he appeared to want nothing in return other than a few powerful friends, according to Democratic fund-raisers in New York and California who knew him.

What those friends did not know, however, was that Mr. Hsu was running from a 15-year-old arrest warrant for a fraud conviction and a hidden past of bankruptcy. And his political donations helped to bolster his image as a man to do business with.

He was a compulsive name-dropper who even took time to befriend campaign workers, pulling strings to get them reservations at tough-table restaurants like Nobu in Manhattan.

His political activities came to occupy such a central role in his life that when he composed a suicide note last week while running from the authorities, he specified that his funeral arrangements should be handled by a young former Democratic Party staffer who once coordinated fund-raising in New York, although he had not been in touch with her in more than a year.

Like the deep-pocketed gamblers who are the targets of Las Vegas casinos, Mr. Hsu was quickly recognized by dozens of Democratic campaigns as a soft-touch cash machine, and they tapped into his largess without investigating the source of his wealth. Mr. Hsu was so eager to please that he was racing to become the first person to...

Translation: We here at the Times would like you to please believe this is all about Mr. Hsu and not about the Democratic Party and certainly not at all about Hillary. Can you manage that for us? Thank you.

Their spin is pretty obvious, but just keeping the story alive...and on the front page...is enough for now.

Hillary still has to deal with her big fundraiser Wyatt going to jail. You know, the big Texas oil moneyman who’s going to jail over his business in Iraq.

Don’t her Lefty friends just love Big Oil Texans with business in Iraq?!

...So Hsu staying on the front pages is just the warmup. Hillary’s going to simmer all through the primaries.

Will she get burned?!

A couple of afternoons ago, National Public Radio ran a report on the Hsu fund-raising scandal. The reporter (whose name escapes me at the moment) began by stating emphatically that, far from being complicit in Hsu's activity, Hillary Clinton and her campaign are its victims (how could he possibly know this before all of the facts of the case are in evidence?, I remember asking myself). He then played a sound bite from an interview with a Republican campaign staffer who spoke generically about the dangers of not vetting large campaign contributors. I guess the reporter thought that by getting a Republican to say something like that, listeners to NPR would just have to conclude that Hillary and her campaign are entirely blameless in the Hsu affair.

Perhaps we need to invent a term for situations such as these. Just as ex post facto means 'after the fact' or 'retrospectively', we should say that ex pre facto means 'before the fact' or 'prospectively'. And so what NPR did in its story the other day is give an ex pre facto public exoneration of Hillary Clinton and her campaign from any wrongdoing in the Hsu affair.

Nicely done, NPR.

Hsu “wanted to get on the party’s A-list, and he knew it would take a lot of money,” said a prominent California Democratic fund-raiser... A Clinton White House is like a subway. You have to put in coins to open the gates.

More “in kind” donation by the NYTs for the DNC prop[aganda effort.

Hsu is an agent for the Chinese Government who has been funneling money into the Clintons and otherr DemoTraitors coffers for over a decade.

LOL...this is a pathetically transparent attempt to say that Hsu gave all this money just to be loved, wanting absolutely nothing in return. Only Pinch is stupid enough to believe that lame whitewash of another Clinton money scandal.

There now Stephie and little Timmey are ready for this AM.

he specified that his funeral arrangements should be handled by a young former Democratic Party staffer...he had not been in touch with her in more than a year.

And that's another question! No girlfriend? A guy that liberal with cash, ought to have a gold-digger on his arm. Yet no girlfriend as well as no family.
My tin hat doesn't talk to me but if it did, it'd be asking whether this guy IS Norman Hsu, and not someone who just assumed his identity a few years ago.

Hsu is "troubled".

Vince Foster was "troubled".

The New York Slime has just joined in Hillary's conspiracy to intimidate a witness against her.

Put some orange tape around the building and close it!

For example, a New York investor [Joel Rosenman] who directed $40 million to Mr. Hsu first did business with him in 2002, a full year before Mr. Hsu began making campaign contributions and well before he became a fixture at Democratic fund-raising events.

My nose is telling me Joel Rosenman is key in this thing.

Rosenman and Hsu are in business, alright---running a Chinese laundry.

The odyssey of the $40 mill---in and out of business accounts, to Rosenman,
to Hsu, then to Hillary-------is an adventure Marco Polo would have envied.
