Chafee no longer a Republican
Former Repubican Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, who lost his seat in last years Democratic congressional wave, announced that he has left the Republican Party, according to the Providence Journal.
Its not my party any more, he said.
In his seven-year tenure in the Senate, Chafee frequently split from his party on key legislation. He opposed the war in Iraq, voted with Democrats on estate tax and HMO regulation legislation and refused to support the confirmation of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.
In the past, Chafee had insisted that he would remain in the Republican Party. But he did not endorse President Bush for re-election in 2004, and faced a fierce primary challenge from his right in last years Senate race.
Chafee and his father, former Sen. John Chafee, held Rhode Islands Senate seat in Republican hands for 30 years. National Republicans poured money into the state last year to aid Chafees re-election, but he lost to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).

Now that he has given up the Republican party, maybe we can have a cherished Republican name (Lincoln) back too.
He is loathe to retain it.

The thing that really bends me is the Republican 'establishment' who dump millions into supporting the likes of this dirtbag over solid Conservative Republicans. I'm sure we all could name more than a handful of backstabbing RINOs who have the support of 'the party' who should be joining Chafee in circling the bowl while solid Conservatives are supported.

I saw this guy on C-SPAN a few years ago, ponificating about something, and my God, the guy was a rambling nitwit! How he ever got elected is beyond me as he came off absolutely witless and you’d think that even the voters would have seen it. The Democratic challenger must have been a weak one. Then again, they might as well have had their own in their for all the good he was.

Oh, please, please come back, Mr. Chafee, sir. We’ll be glad to change the entire party platform, just to satisfy you. And we’ll be happy to toss millions of Christian voters overboard, just to make you feel more at home. And we’ll readily change our foreign policy. I’m so very sorry that our serious efforts to stop international terrorism and to protect Israel have offended you. Just go to Newport and take a poll of the rich yacht & limousine crowd there, report back to us on what they want, and we’ll obey without question.
Anything...ANYTHING...to keep an asset such as you in the party, Mr. Chafee, sir.
