PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix police officer was killed Tuesday by a man who was himself later fatally shot as he pointed a gun at a carjacking victim's head.

The officer, 33-year-old Nick Erfle, had been trying to arrest the suspect on a warrant when the two got into a fight. The suspect pulled his gun and fired, police spokesman Sgt. Joel Tranter said.

As Erfle was taken to a hospital, police scrambled to find the suspect. The man had run away, flung open the passenger door of a car stopped in traffic, pointed his gun at the man inside, and told him to drive.

Officers found and stopped the car a short time later. As the officers approached, Tranter said, the suspect pointed the gun at the hostage's head.

Police killed the suspect in the car with a single shot. The hostage was not injured, police said.

Erfle, a married father of two and an eight-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"The citizens of Phoenix have lost another hero in our community," Assistant Police Chief Mike Frazier said.

Erfle grew up in central North Dakota, on a farm near Heaton, and graduated from Fessenden High School, said Wells County Sheriff's Deputy Allen Kluth.

Arizona Republic is reporting that the shooter was a previously-deported, previously-incarcerated, drug-using illegal alien father of three, and that the slain officer was a cancer survivor and father of two.

The Arizona Republic should explain to taxpayers the public financing of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, and the Border Infrastructure Project implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies........that's OUR tax dollars.

FROM THE ARIZONA-MEXICO COMMISSION WEB SITE http://www.azmc.org/

Welcome to the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC) online news and information resource. The Arizona-Mexico Commission is Arizona's premiere cross-border organization.

We are a mission-driven non-profit organization chaired by Arizona's governor, Janet Napolitano. Our mission is to improve the economic well being and quality of life for residents of Arizona by promoting a strong, cooperative relationship with Mexico and Latin America through advocacy, trade, networking and information.

"The Border Infrastructure Project database is the single source of information on Arizona’s border infrastructure projects. It tracks each project’s progress along its approval, programming and funding paths and provides the information in a concise and timely way. I hope this is a valuable tool for you and that you will use it often." - Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano

The University of Arizona Office of Economic and Policy Analysis developed the Border Infrastructure Project concept in partnership with the Arizona-Mexico Commission. It is being implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies. Border communities and stakeholders will be engaged in this project through outreach efforts.

The MSM headline will be: Phoenix officer, N.D. native, killed (by an illegal gun)

The MSM lead editorial will be: Deport the guns now!

Prayers for the officer and his family.

When will this insanity end?

I'm really beginning to think it's going to take a mob with pitchforks on the steps of the Capital building in DC......

Capital Police would be given this order by Congress, Shoot to Kill!

Assuming they weren't all cowering in fear inside.

Back a few years ago the Tennessee Legislature floated the idea of a State Income Tax, despite the fact that the State Constitution specifically prohibits such a tax. Outraged voters surrounded the capital building in Nashville for several days, honking horns and making a lot of noise while the Legislature was in session. These "fearless leaders" had the capital police lock the doors to the building, violating the state's "sunshine" law. The protest, albeit loud, was peaceful. As they cowered in fear inside the idea of a state income tax was quickly shelved and somehow to this very day we've managed to survive and thrive without a state income tax. All their predictions of a financial crisis that would hit the state if the income tax were not enacted never came to pass. Imagine that!

I personally participated in and witnessed this glorious day and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson: A little revolution now and then is a good thing!

There were bets on the thread yesterday on whether or not this would turn out to be an illegal.
Totally disgusted here.

Un-[blank]-believable.

Meanwhile, there are people on FR cheering the DREAM Act. I’m sick about this.

To be honest, I wouldn't have taken that bet - I was thinking with a name like Anthony he'd be an 'merrican.

What gets tiresome are those who delight in pointing out their fellow FReeper's perceived 'racism' for guessing the perp was an illegal.

There is an illegal alien crime wave going on and rather than mau-mauing its victims they ought to be directing fire at the enablers of the invasion thats causing the perception.

I read an article a while back about how Mexicans in Mexico have been giving their children American first names for many years.
I guess the thought is that when they sneak in here they will fit right in.

This is reprehensible! It’s stories like this one that sicken me more and more. When is our Congress going to WAKE UP? When are AMERICANS going to WAKE UP and learn how to make your voices heard? These illegals are mocking us left and right, and they are taking down innocent Americans every single day.

Americans...WE are the home team, and these illegals are trespassing on OUR turf. If we don’t start defending it, who will?

My prayers for the entire Phoenix P.D., and of course, for his family. Fellow AMERICANS, we have let these folks down.

I don't care what anyone says, the War on Terror is alive and well in the streets of AZ.

“Meanwhile, there are people on FR cheering the DREAM Act. I’m sick about this.”

FR does have it’s share of econo/amnesty bots. I’ll bet they’re the same who argued with us in the past about open borders and illegal immigration. Some are hiding behind their so-called ‘no amnesty’ candidates, same as they did Bush. Others are just uninformed, like the general public.
