Inflicting white neuroses on nonwhite women
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 21, 2007 | Paul F. Campos

Americans are obsessed with fat because fatness has become a symbol for poverty, downward mobility, nonwhiteness and socially marginal status in general. Fear and hatred of fat has very little to do with the health risks associated with being "overweight" and "obese" (which are wholly imaginary and highly exaggerated

I associate fatness with a sedentary lifestyle and too much emphasis on food.

I don’t think of it as black/white, rich/poor - just a choice of lifestyle.

Guess I’m odd.

No, fatness is a symbol of low or no self-esteem, no motivation, and no self-control. There's a fairly simple solution: eat less and exercise more. And no one can convince me that a bag of apples (or whatever fruit is in season) costs more than a box of sugary and fat-laden candy bars (and I loooooove chocolate).

BTW - I’ve gone to professional meetings where wealthy white male engineers had to sit with their legs spread so their bellies could hang between them. Too much time behind a desk. Too many donuts at the meetings. It had nothing to do with poverty or race.

That’s the Mike Huckabee diet, I understand. Eat an apple every day.

I work at a Fortune 500 company. I realized the other day that all the more elite women were in really good shape while the lower level women in general are not in such great shape.

Fact of life, image counts.

Aren’t we supposed to move beyond race at some point? What does race have to do with being overweight?

Pretty much.

The fundamental strategy of the war on fat is to universalize the attitudes of middle- and upper-class white American women toward weight, food, dieting and exercise. Such women are taught from a very early age to hate their bodies.

That must be it. If you want to diet and keep healthy, it's got to be that you hate your body.

The real travesty is that they actually pay people to think and write like this?

So “Fat” is now considered a race? Huh? Or were the authors saying it’s OK for minority women to be fat? I’m confused.

Inflicting white neuroses on nonwhite women

Better than inflicting nonwhite neurosis on white chicks. I'm getting real tired of hearing pale yuppie chicks calling each other "sistah" and yelling "You go, girl!"

It's just plain goofy, is what it is.

Well, it shouldn't make a difference to Martin Luther King's color blind society, but the article above this one has these figures:

It is a mistake to think that obesity is a problem only in certain social or racial groups. It is rampant in all races, in both genders, and across all ages. It would be (sic) mistake as well to believe that race and social class do not matter. The prevalence of significant obesity (body mass index over 30) in the U.S. population is 29% for Caucasians, 34% for Hispanics and 40% for African Americans. Fully 78% of African American females are overweight or obese.

78 percent is a HUGH figure. How can this be?

The article is in the LA Times. If your IQ is greater than your shoe size, of course it's going to be insulting.
