CANTON - Former NBA and Bradley basketball coach Dick Versace hopes to add another win to his record with a bid for Congress.

"I'm all in," Versace, a Democrat, said Thursday.

His confirmation ends several weeks of speculation about whether he would seek election for the 18th Congressional District seat held by Ray LaHood, who is not seeking re-election.

Typical bumper sticker mentality of the Dems: "I hate the war, but I love the warriors," Versace said.

Using his celebrity to help raise taxes, surrender to terrorists and push gay marriage. Thank DICK.

‘I’m going to go on a listening tour’.

That’s all that Dems have to do to get elected. They don’t have to actually answer any questions, they just have to appear sympathetic to the masses. Ask Hillary!. Seven years later she STILL doesn’t have to answer any questions.

This is LaHood’s district and he won re-election in 2006 by 67-33. A good Republican should be able to hold this seat.

Is this Versace any relation to the Versace who was murdered in 1997?

Somehow the reporter of that story forgot to mention this little tidbit:

The NCAA found Bradley guilty of eight violations in the recruitment of former player Anthony Webster, calling Versace's conduct unethical.

Or maybe she could've mentioned that Versace hasn't lived in the area for 20 years.

I doubt it. Their last names are pronounced differently, too (a rough translation: Ver-saych compared to Ver-sah-chee).

Unfortunately, a lot of stupid voters take them seriously, identify with them, and will vote for them because they were good athletes.

Heath Shuler in North Carolina is a good example. He beat a well entrenched GOP incumbent by six points. The incumbent never had a chance as Shuler was a famous football star from a neighboring state.

I didn't think it was likely. Gianni Versace, the fashion designer, was born in Italy...the coach is probably from a family which has lived in the US for several generations. I had never heard of the guy who got killed until I saw the headlines about his murder, and I hadn't heard of the coach until this announcment (I don't follow Bradley University sports teams).

Peoria Co. went narrowly for Gore in 2000 and for Kerry in 2004, but some of the nearby counties went heavily for Bush...it ought to be a seat that the Republicans can hold on to.

Shuler is from NC (Swain county), he lived in TN for most of his adult life, but he wasn't exactly a carpetbagger.

Taylor had ethical questions that hurt him, but hopefully our own Congressman Billybob will be able to retake the seat in '08.

No, but they're both gay (at least Dick's platform is).

I don’t think that Versace’s name will help him, for the obvious reasons.

I don’t think age will help, either (nevermind the residency issue). You don’t embark on a Congressional career when you’re nearly 70 (especially as a rodent that doesn’t believe in term limits). Of course, there was RI’s Theodore Francis Green who “retired” to the Senate at nearly the age of 70... he stayed for almost a quarter century. It wasn’t until Strom came along that he broke his record for most elderly 90-something Senator.

I have long known about Dick Versace as a bad NBA coach with funny-looking hair, but recently I found out that his brother Rocky was a Congressional Medal of Honor winner during the Vietnam War. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humbert_Roque_Versace

BTW, Versace is of Italian and Puerto Rican descent, so he is the Illinois Democrat candidate for “unlikeliest district to be represented by a member of the Hispanic Caucus” (the IL GOP candidate for such honor is Lauzen in Hastert’s CD).
