Why, does she have a beard these days? I guess she's getting on in years. . .
The South is not “gonna do it again.” Get over yourself.
Let me rephrase before this goes too much further:
If Lincoln had not succeeded in the CW, the door would not have been open for FDR to come along and take us further down the socialist hole of government dependency for everything.
I thought the same thing, lol!
you were clear. I doubt that any of that stuff amounts to much compared to telling a man you have the right to sell his wife and kids.
It is always difficult to separate 'causes' of the war vs. 'outcomes' of the war.
Surely you realize that Lincoln had more interest in saving the Union then for freeing the slaves (as noble as that cause may be).
Really? Then how do I or my husband know that information? He went to public school, I went to Catholic school. 5 years apart and in different states.
Is Lincoln a hero? Did you ever read “The Real Lincoln”? What do you find heroic about him? His prosecution of a war that need not have been? His jailing of opponents? His lifetime of racism, followed by the opportunistic freeing of (only) Southern slaves? His creation of the FedGov beheamoth in place of the small central government of the founders?
Looks like some folks are going to refight the war in this thread. ;-)
Wonder if Speilberg is going to mention the rumors that old Abe was bi-sexual. Liberals never pass up a chance to revise history.
I wouldn’t doubt it. If Neeson can play Kinsey getting it on with a dude, they’ll show some pole-smokin’ log cabin Republicanism in action.
“I just can’t quit you, Abe.”
Ah, yes, Never fails that a few people will disparage Lincoln on this board.
I suppose it makes sense. A man that kept the country together and led to the end of slavery inspired enough hate for his actions that he was murdered. That kind of passion just doesn’t die no matter how much time passes. Pitiful, but a reality.
No matter.
The good that was his legacy is greater then any shadows of hate or dislike that try to chase him to this day. And, yes, he is my FAVORITE President and the one I respect most. Washington being my close second.
Oh, and Sally Fields and Spielberg making a movie about Lincoln? They really ought to stick to concepts they understand. I’ll be shocked if they somehow tumble upon a correct telling of that man and time in history.
Glad a took a pass on that movie.
Without Lincoln, the CSA would have degenerated into another Mexico, except even worse because it would have maintained slavery for at least another generation. We would be dealing with the problem of poor, illiterate, confederates sneaking across the Mason-Dixon line just to find work in the US.
Wasn’t Mary Todd Lincoln a little nuts? Sally Field is a good choice for the part then.
One of? Honestly which one was worse? Granted I’ll give you Wilson for getting us involved in affairs that were none of our business, and FDR for his worthless programs that Republican ‘conservatives’ look to save in some fashion just 70 years later (which says more about ‘conservatives’ than FDR). But at least they didn’t attack another nation to fund internal improvement schemes.
And I will be damned, but each time we do, the same side always wins!
If they did they would have a block buster of a movie considering that he committed the greatest political blunder since the inception of the country! That being an unnecessary civil war resulting in 620,000+ deaths and sectional animosity that still exists today.
Yes, the public would be shocked to learn the real story! Unfortunately the truth about Lincoln would ruffle many feathers, however it would likely be a box office sensation!
