Poll: Clinton, Thompson Ahead in North Carolina; Dole Gets Mixed Messages

RALEIGH, N.C. — About half of the public approves of how Sen. Elizabeth Dole is doing her job a year before she runs for another six-year term, according to a poll released Friday.

The Elon University Poll also found Hillary Clinton has a sizable lead over John Edwards in his home state for the Democratic presidential nomination, while former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is apparently ahead of Rudy Giuliani among Republicans.

--snip--

The poll also found Clinton receiving 37 percent of support for president among Democrats surveyed, compared to 18 percent apiece for Edwards and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

While North Carolina likely won't play a role in choosing the Democratic nominee since its primary is in May, Bacot said Edwards' poor showing "is noteworthy given that this is Edwards' home state."

Among Republican candidates for president, Thompson received support of 28 percent, followed by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 21 percent, Sen. John McCain at 12 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 8 percent.

Looking at next year's race for governor, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue has an apparent lead over State Treasurer Richard Moore for the Democratic nomination, 35 percent to 27 percent, but 38 percent surveyed hadn't made up their minds.

Perdue will begin her campaign for governor on Monday in New Bern.

The uncertainty was much greater among Republican choices for governor, with two-thirds polled not choosing a candidate. Salisbury attorney Bill Graham had 12 percent of the vote, following by state Sen. Fred Smith and former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr at 11 percent apiece.

The presidential and gubernatorial surveys had margins of error between 6 percantage points and 7 percentage points.

Good news for Fred Thompson is coming in trainloads today. Too bad he's old, sickly, lazy and got in too late....

“Edwards’ poor showing ‘is noteworthy given that this is Edwards’ home state.’”

Does anyone, besides this egomaniac and his pushy wife, honestly think he has a chance at this?

Well, I think this poll does show most North Carolinans aren’t really informed enough to make a decision.

2/3 of them can’t even voice an opinion on the race for governor? Come on, guys! Not even an opinion?

But what it does show is very bad news for Edwards, who is the one candidate who they should be more than familiar with.

Why is it when Fred’s winning decisively he’s “apparently” ahead?

Ok...in a rare "give 'em the benefit of the doubt" moment for me, I'll say that technically the gap between Sen. Thompson and Mayor Giuliani is within the margin of error, albeit on the very extreme edge of it. MOE is 6-7%.

Must be Friday....I feel like being nice.

Senator Dole has done an outstanding job, Senator Burr on the other hand, has been a disappointment. He and his buddy Lindsey Graham voted to bring the amnesty bill back to the floor. Burr knew it was against the will of the people, but he tried to force it on us.

Burr voted against the DREAM bill, but I still don’t trust him.

Go Fred!

But Mutt has better hair.

Perhaps hair wont be the major issue this time?

Can't we get a real Republican to replace Liddy? I know she voted against the Shamnesty but that was only because she was afraid of a primary battle.

She needs to stay home so she's handy when Bob pops those little blue pills.

Having worked in the House of Representatives before (I have interned anyway): I am not defending Burr, but I know a litte about proceedure- sure it would have been better for Burr to kill the bill the first time, instead of letting it come back up to kill in the final vote, yet...but I believe he only did it to vet everyone’s arguments fully for and against it..He voted against it in the end, anyway..! Just my take.

Right. It's not worth it. You have Democrats that have given us a state lottery and higher taxes (gotta love our gas tax) or country club Republicans. Does it really matter? No. Why have an opinion? The country club Republicans had to ship in this old bag to run for Senate, even though we have viable candidates that have lived here their whole lives

About half of the public approves of how Sen. Elizabeth Dole is doing her job a year before she runs for another six-year term, according to a poll released Friday.

The sooner she leaves office the better for us all. Course she won't come 'home' to live as before she needed to run for Senate she hadn't been 'home' in decades. I'm not exactly sure she even knows where NC is on a map considering we see her so often...

Or the voters are too un-informed to form an opinion?

***The survey of 664 North Carolina residents taken this week showed 50 percent approved or strongly approved of Dole’s job as senator and 25 percent disapproved, while the remainder didn’t know or didn’t respond. Fifty-three percent said they were satisfied with how she represented the state.***

Liddy Dole’s polling is decent considering that 1st tier candidates have no interest in challenging her. Dole could lose if two things ocurr - (1) Liddy has a few Macaca moments and (2) Hillary makes NC into a tossup race.

That will NOT happen! There is NO way that Hillary will be the first Dem to win NC since Jimmy Carter. We may have the “good ole boy” Democratic network in state government, but we seem to regain our senses when voting for the POTUS and US Senators.
