100 Of The Most Popular Political Websites On The Net
Right Wing News ^ | Sept. 07 | by John Hawkins

Posted on 09/28/2007 8:53:03 PM PDT by Rennes Templar

Over the last few months here at RWN, my favorite blogs have been ranked, I've had other people rank their favorite blogs, and I've regularly listed the web pages that send me the most traffic. Today, I thought it might be interesting to see which political websites actually receive the most traffic. So I picked a number of popular political websites from both sides of the ideological spectrum, sprinkled in a generous helping of popular blogs, and then I went to Alexa.com and ranked the 50 political websites that I came up with. Do keep in mind that...

1) Every popular political website isn't included. If anyone was left out, my apologies, it wasn't intended. But, I had to cut the list off at some point or we would have ended up with a ridiculously large list.

2) Alexa can't properly read all the Blog*spot pages so they all receive the same rank. Because of that, none of them were included.

3) Last but not least, Alexa sometimes cannot distinguish between the main page and secondary page of a website. For example, Alexa gives Eric Alterman's blog the same ranking as MSNBC which meant I had to leave out a few blogs of interest that were hosted on much larger pages.

All 50 websites are listed with their Alexa rank following their link. So for example, a "1" would mean the page was the most popular website on the net. A "100,000" would mean the 100,000th most popular page on the net. With that being said, let's go ahead and take a look at the rankings.

***Update***: Due to popular demand, I've decided add another 50 political websites to the list. This should give a much more complete picture of the most popular political websites out there.

This list is suspect.

It's old. Very old.

Media Whores Online is ahead of Daily Kos by a few point. I wonder how you tell the difference?

Post the current ratings.

OK, here you are. KOS is around 4,200 and DU comes in at about 14,500.

I’m not really big on statistics but I am a bit confused too.How come the lower the ranking, the more viewers?

I’ve heard Alexa is not that acurate.

Where did you hear that? Jim uses Alexia:

Who reads FR? Over 200,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic since inception in 1996 and our forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and all around the world. Oh, we're big stuff all right: See Traffic Rank on Alexa.com. Traffic Rank on Alexa.com

I trust that if Jim uses it, it is decent.

It isn’t accurate, If you don’t have the alexa toolbar installed you don’t count in it’s statistics.

How many people on this thread have it installed? I know I don’t.

Ignore Alexa ratings.

Alexa had big ambitions early in the “Web 1.0” days to be “Nielsen” of the Internet, but it became - and still is - considered to be a spyware (”trackware”), and is routinely removed from machines by various anti-spyware and anti-virus programs. Alexa disagrees, but their distinction supposedly is that spyware is installed on your machine without your knowledge and for nefarious purposes, whereas they let you know if you choose to install it, toolbar is displayed and can be turned off by user at any time or simply uninstalled. Also, Alexa toolbar is only used with IE browser, not Firefox, Mozilla, Opera or any other (though that is still a relatively small percentage, it’s quite possible that some sites could have a large proportion of their traffic from people using alternative browsers and thus would not be measured.)

Nielsen Media Research (subsidiary of Nielsen, former VNU) is now working to avoid these pitfalls, to that end this year it acquired full ownership of its subsidiaries NetRatings and BuzzMetrics, and is trying to install metering at points of entry for accuracy, but does not entirely rely on this method for sites who don’t use their metering.

It seems like a very different list from the one published 6-8 weeks back. I notice some sites aren't there any more.

It's quite a hodgepodge of blogs, article/comment sites like FR, and even mainstream publications that produce their own articles. I'm not sure what such a list really tells anyone.

The main thing I get out of it is FR is a lot more popular than many others.
