Duke University President Apologizes to Lacrosse Players

DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University President Richard Brodhead apologized Saturday for not better supporting the men's lacrosse players falsely accused in last year's highly publicized rape scandal. "Given the complexities of this case, getting the communication right would never have been easy," Brodhead said. "But the fact is that we did not get it right, causing the families to feel abandoned when they were most in need of support. This was a mistake. I take responsibility for it and I apologize for it."

It’s late, and it doesn’t give the boys back the money and time lost. The DA should be paying the boys half of his salary for the rest of his life.

I wonder if the school is looking at a huge lawsuit? I mean after all these months, why now? I thought Duke had given each accused player a large settlement? Maybe it’s coming from another direction....like the fired coach or the other players that were not accused. Strange...

Translation: “Please accept my insincere apologies and crocodile tears, everyone. If you do, maybe you won’t sue me and you donors will start giving us money again. Please, please don’t sue us.”

None of them will leave. And stupid parents will continue to pay something like $45,000 a year so their kid can go to Duke and be brain-washed by the faculty and administration. But Duke is not the only one. Most US colleges and universities have the same level of ignorance and intellectual dishonesty among their faculties and administrators.

IIRC, the school is looking at a *number* of huge lawsuits from all the unindicted players that they screwed over. Consider that many members of the lacrosse team that weren’t even at the event in question got flunked out by professors at Duke for no reason other than the fact that they were on the team - and the administration was complicit in that.

Rumor has it that endowments and donations for Duke are down by an astonishing amount this year.

As is, apparently, applications.

3 players and their families only:

Published: Jun 18, 2007 02:57 PM

Duke, lacrosse players reach settlement
By Anne Blythe, Staff Writer

DURHAM - Duke University has reached a settlement with each of the three former lacrosse players and their families.

The university made the announcement this afternoon.

According to a press release issued by Duke, the terms of the settlement will not be disclosed.

In a statement, Duke officials said the board of trustees and Duke President Richard Brodhead had determined that it was in the best interests of the Duke community to eliminate the possibility of future litigation and move forward

“This past year has been hard for many people who care about Duke — for students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends — and for the three students and their families most of all,” the Duke statement said. “We resolve to bring the Duke family together again, and to work to protect others from similar injustices in the criminal justice system in the future. “

The players, Dave Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann, also provided a statement.

“Years ago, each of us made a decision to attend Duke because it is one of the greatest universities in the nation,” the players stated. “We were drawn to Duke because of its sense of community. The events of the last year tore the Duke community apart, and forcibly separated us from the university we love.

“It is impossible to fully describe what we, our families and team endured. As we said from day one, we are innocent. But it took three-hundred and ninety-four days, and the intervention of the North Carolina Attorney General, before our innocence was formally declared. ...We hope that today’s resolution will begin to bring the Duke family back together again, and we look forward to working with the University to develop and implement initiatives that will prevent similar injustices and ensure that the lessons of the last year are never forgotten.”

Yup. Duke is going to be running scared, shortly - because their alumni (the most important thing to any uni) are pissed and unwilling to support much of a defense, their revenues are dropping, and there’s a tsunami of lawsuits that are about to hit them, rightfully so.

If you decide to play with fire, don’t get surprised when you get burned.

got flunked out by professors at Duke for no reason other than the fact that they were on the team

Did that really happen? Do you have a source?

And the rest of the team is finding lawyers about now, if they don’t have them already.

Duke thought the problem would go away when they paid off the three accused players. The unindicted players and LAX staff are next, and I think several will ignore settlements just to drag Duke into court and get several discoveries made public....

Kim Curtis, Duke professor, automatically flunked any lacrosse player she had.

When reviewed by other related professors, Curtis’ F grade on the papers was clearly not warranted.

Specifically:

“Curtis’ decision to fail Dowd almost blocked his graduation. Only the extraordinary intercession of a fair-minded member of Duke’s administration allowed Dowd to graduate, by arranging for an additional transfer of a course he had taken at Johns Hopkins.”

Surprise! Grade retaliation is a reality at Duke (and elsewhere).

Change-of-venue is always an option - and the way the Feds are poking around in Durham right now, I suspect that there isn’t a court in the area that wouldn’t grant it.

Alternately, the case could be brought in *Federal* court, as tuition payments are often made across state lines.... Interstate Wire Fraud, anyone?
