Even though I think what Columbia did was wrong, I have a problem with that. If Columbia bans ROTC, then the Govt should take funds away.

Mind you, I believe that federal funding of education should very very limited to begin with.

Laws must be general in scope: they must apply to all citizens. Making a law that applies to only one person or legal entity is BAD LAWMAKING and causes a loss of respect for the law.

I like it. Makes more sense than the idiotic, “Anti-Limbaugh,” thing that they’re going to try.

I applaud Mr. Duncan Hunter's sentiment, and share his opinion that Columbia's invitation to Ahmanutjob was wrong and stupid. Whether cutting off funds and contracts is an appropriate response is for greater minds than mine to debate.

Regardless, I think the sweeping goal of "Restore Patriotism to University Campuses [Act]" is a rather unlikely outcome of this penalty on Columbia; pleasant though it would be to not have our campuses filled with hate towards America. It'll take more than this act to reverse 50 years of that.

I am as much opposed to the government funding of private universities as I am of their funding for NPR.

To me there is no basic substantial difference. They are areas the government simply "doesn't belong".

Like the security guard at the NSA gate told me, "You Don't Belong Here".

Agreed. Banning ROTC and minuteman yet supporting pro-terror nutcase (whose regime actually executes homosexuals and kills american troops) is a disgrace (but hey, they are not against gay marriage!). Anyway, read my lips: No federal money to Columbia U.

Columbia University hosts Middle Eastern "Studies" dept that consists mainly of pro-terrorism frauds whose "research" tries to prove that ancient Israel did not exist and there are no homosexuals in Arab world (and even if there is, it is western/zionist conspiracy). The professors are known for their hatred of jews (including Columbia U students who are jewish).

No homosexuals in Arab world (Columbia U prof)

Doesn’t federal law already state that if an educational institution bans the ROTC then fed funding can be cut off? Is that correct or not?

Anyone out there know the answer to this?

Thanks!

Hopefully this law, if it passes, would apply to all universities, not just Columbia.

It’s time that our institutions of higher learning moderate their points of view, especially by the guests they invite and to whom they give a prestigious forum.

Captain Marmalade, the Persian, has made it abundantly clear that he wants to remove Israel from the earth. In my view, that’s about as close to a declaration of war, or at the very least, murderous intent, as he could get.

And Columbia invited him to speak because why?

Get serious.

Did we cut off funding when a prof called the 911 victims “Little Eichmanns”?

Jeez.

Duncan Hunter is correct with his legislation.

Also, no University or college should receive one dollar from the government. If they can’t make it on their own
with tuition (and profs are over paid especially with TAs doing most of the instruction.) then shut down the school.

People with degrees are a dime a dozen anyways.

Defintively reactionary crap.. PLEASE “Restore Patriotism To University Campuses Act?... When did a University Campus EVER have patriotism as a founding principal? This is totally rediculous. How about an “Act in a way a public representative should act to make the country proud, ACT”

First: Let’s identify the real problem here.. If the accusation and ruling is that Ahmadinejad is IN FACT, absolutely, without question, a TERRORIST, then our own government is to blame first and foremost for ALLOWING a bonefide TERRORIST into the country. Columbia University inviting him doesn’t get him here or give him immunity to be here, nor does the UN. Some would argue diplomatic immunity... If we, again, have officially declared him an actual Terrorist (to the point that a representative can create an ACT punishing a third party ), then the rules of diplomacy and foreign diplomatic relations BY OUR OWN LAWS DO NOT APPLY. He should have been immediately carted off to Gitmo the moment he set foot on American soil.

2nd: In regards to Columbia University: What is this, kindergarten, “Oh I’m tellllling, they invited a Terro.. Terr, Terroriiss To Class!” Patriotism is not a college requirement, however, the proper and ethical teaching of Political Science could be a major issue. Inviting a world leader so we can kangaroo-court him like IDIOTS on international television make us out to be the intolerable, unethical, arrogant, dumb Americans everyone else already thinks we are.

Honestly we are “spanking” the wrong “PART” of the University. The Federal Contracts are used at Columbia for Miltary DOD, DOE, and advanced Physics research (such as Nevis labs), ALL in which aid our military and technological advancement. The problem area are the Liberal “Fruit Booties” that invited the guy. If we want to hit that, we need to find a way to cut off funding to the “Political Sciences” and “Arts” at Columbia U, instead of the one part of the University (the scientists, engineers, and researchers, most of which are conservative due to logic and reason) that indeed help our country.

In such a case, Cut off grants to ANY University PROGRAM that employs unethical teaching practices or that publicly degrade the image of the USA. This may walk a thin line with censorship when enforced with the wrong intent and with certain programs. Specifically , we need to enforce ethical teaching practices to our children. Had the students been underage, this incident would equate to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. (if it wasn’t so American and Cool to bash a terrorist on International TV)

In the case of Columbia, it’s Lib Arts and Political Sciences programs should be investigated and all grants suspended from such programs, consequences should also apply for anyone who provides aid to such a University in those particualr Programs. Accreditations should be reviewed as well.

Basically, get Ahmadinejad classified as an undisputable terrorist, then arrest or shoot his butt (if we truly believe this to be the case). Support ethical teaching methods of our students, punish Universities that practice unethical teaching that brings disgrace and dishonor upon our nation.
