New Military ATV
Green Car Congress ^ | September 30th, 2007 | Various

Polaris Industries Inc. has completed first production of and received orders from the US Department of Defense for its newest military vehicle, the MV800 4X4 ATV. The MV800 is Polaris’ first vehicle featuring a new 760cc, 30kW (40 hp) twin-cylinder 4-stroke engine utilizing a newly developed air-assisted direct-injection combustion system.

TOPICS:
KEYWORDS: atv; defensecontractors; fuel; military; miltech; troops
The new Patriot Engine uses JP8 as the primary fuel. The new engine, developed in partnership with Australian-based Orbital Corporation, surpasses traditional, diesel compression engines in this size with almost twice the horsepower.

Overall vehicle performance is thus the same or similar to Polaris’ gasoline-powered family of Ultra-light Tactical Vehicles for the military. In addition to running on JP8, the Patriot Engine can operate on emergency fuels including gasoline, JP5 and highway diesel.

The new production launch represents the culmination of a two-year program between Polaris and Orbital to develop a spark ignited engine running on kerosene without sacrificing the performance of the gasoline engine.

This product launch is a key milestone in the development of new markets for Orbital direct injection technology. This is the first 4-stroke production application and we see this as a key step in expanding the capability to many other engines and markets. The initial market for this product will be the military, but the flexibility of the Direct Injection system has now been proven, and we see the potential for other commercial multi-fuel vehicles and gasoline engines going forward. —Rod Houston, Orbital CEO

Rather than using high-pressure injection to atomize the fuel charge, Orbital uses an air-assisted, low-pressure direct fuel injection, combustion and engine management system: the Orbital Combustion Process (OCP) technology.

With OCP, fuel is first metered into an injector pre-chamber via a conventional automotive port injector (MPI), and then delivered into the combustion chamber with the assistance of air at pressure. The air-assisted injector decouples the fuel metering and delivery events, thereby assisting the dynamic range of the injector, according to Orbital.

Thanks CT.

Note, this engine is spark ignited yet runs on a diesel type fuel.

You know, that thing doesn't look a whole lot smaller than the original jeep... which carried four and had a top.

Looks pretty good, though I’ll bet it produces some narly “over-the-handlebars” accidents. In terrain just like that in the pix.

Tarpon,

Don't know if there is one, like you, much of what we know about this new machine is from the web/press releases.

We’ve been purchasing off-the-shelf (OTS) ATVs for over two decades. I saw them dropped while doing Airborne school in 1986.

Now that’s it’s an “acquired” item, look for it to be twice the cost and half the performance.

The diesel is nice, but I wonder:
The idea is to forward-deploy items like this.
After all, if it were located with the “Big Army”, it would be a HMMWV.

So, is diesel the right choice when your support trains is the local economy?

That photo will suffice, but I’d like to see a gatling gun mounted on the front, and a the turbaned head of a shrieking Iraqui being crushed under one of the front wheels, I believe...

OTOH Polaris makes the worst ATVs you can buy. I’m not happy with the choice of such low quality gear for the troops. Buying Kawasakis or Hondas might seem disloyal but no one with any sense would trust their life to Polaris products.

Jesse Strong was beside Karl when they got hit. Jesse’s Uncle has been trying to get this potential combat vehicle noticed.

Not really an armored Segway, though a balancing or lifting mechanism is within the realm of possibility. I think that was an illustration of a barrier-hopping function. It can be configured as 2-wheel-drive or 4. It’s sort of a modular platform with pieces-parts that can be swapped out.

I was still riding dirt bikes, when those things were first starting to get big. I always thought people were crazy riding those things.

Yes, I know they can carry a load that you can’t on a motorcycle.

His opinion was to make a few of these things, give them to our young military personnel, and let them beat them up. If something comes of it, fine. We don’t need to go through an agonizing 10 year process with all the big contractors and turn this into a main battle tank. Try it. If it’s useful and fast to field, fine. Otherwise, move on.
