"ANECDOTAL" evidence of problems among Sudanese arrivals is behind the Government's decision to cut its intake of African refugees, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews says. The Federal Government has reduced the intake of Africans as a proportion of all refugee arrivals, from 70 per cent to 30 per cent over the past couple of years. It has said previously the reduction was because conditions in some African countries had improved. Sudan has been the scene of one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters stemming from the conflict in the Darfur region. A spokeswoman for Mr Andrews said there were some signs to suggest Africans were having more difficulty settling into Australia than those from other parts of the world. "It's more anecdotal (evidence)," she said, citing media reports of some serious crimes involving Sudanese. ... Sudanese refugee Liep Gony, 18, was bashed to death last week near a Melbourne train station. Mr Andrews rejected suggestions the Government was excluding Muslims and opting instead to allow in Christian refugees from countries like Iraq. "It's not a religious consideration," the spokeswoman said. Logic is to increase the number of immigrants from cultures and regions where people are fitting in well and succeeding. Eg.. Chinese immigrants do well everywhere I have read about. Lower crime rate, higher income, higher education attainment level then the host population.
On the other hand it is only logical to decrease the numbers from cultures and regions where those immigrants are not fitting in well. Eg.. Higher violent crime, organized crime or worse terrorism, low income, heavy use of government services, while paying low amounts of taxation, etc..
If some hug the world, marxist leftists gets in and has a big theory about how ‘this time its different’, they now know how to integrate a cultural group that didn’t fit in before. Don’t jump head over heels in, first invite a few thousand, then study how they fit in over say 20 years. Using your ‘different’ techniques. If it works then increase it gradually after the 20 years.
From my experience and observations, Africans tend to fit in fairly well.
They also have trouble settling here. In fact, they don’t do so well in Africa, either.
I found the same to be true. Most Africans I’ve met were model immigrants; honest, hardworking, family oriented, and always advancing towards a new goal. Anyone who has ever been to college would have to agree that Africans are very serious students for the most part. I work with a few Nigerians and Ethiopians and they make me feel like a slacker. While I just have one job, most of them work at least two jobs and most are also working on post graduate degrees. I also find them to be generally more positive and upbeat than a lot of my American born coworkers.
The African immigrants I’ve encountered are intensely hardworking folks. This is true for the guys selling stuff on the street as it is for the professional class.
Very similar circumstances happened here in GA with Somalis. They just did not fit in. And had problems with modern conveniences. We heard stories of goats in apartments, open cooking fires on patios etc. They eventually got shipped to Maine.
I’ve heard similar stories about the Somalis that were brought to Columbia, SC. The apartments they were housed in soon turned into rat-infested trashy dumps.
I’ve noticed that as well. The Christian Africans in Toronto tend to start their own businesses within a couple of years of arrival, but the muslim immigrants from Somalia and Sudan have been a mixed bag- some do well, but far too many are a drain on our social services and a significant minority are sending money back to the warlords in their home country.
Same here, I think the US can use some more West African immigrants. I know a few bad apples but you’ll get that with any group. Even the Muslims tend not to be anywhere near as radicalized as their Arab counterparts.
Somalis have only two buttons,intensely angry or laid back,about 50/50 here in Ga.Angry cabbies,laid back service workers.I think they must fill out a personality/career test before they get here.
