The new charter stipulated that the CNS, along with the interim government, would leave office when a new elected government was sworn in.
Gen Sonthi said yesterday he stepped down as CNS chief because the position no longer had meaning for him after he retired as army chief at the end of last month.
''It is such a relief to be freed of responsibilities as leader of the CNS,'' he said.
It was better to hand the CNS top job over to a member who was still in control of the armed forces, he said.
Air force chief ACM Chalit Phukphasuk, who has taken over as chairman, said the CNS would not propose the name of a successor to Gen Sonthi as chairman for royal approval.
ACM Chalit rejected rumours that a split had emerged within the CNS following the military reshuffle.
The reorganisation saw Gen Saprang Kalayanamitr, also a member of the CNS, transferred to the post of deputy permanent secretary for defence, instead of succeeding Gen Sonthi as army chief as widely anticipated.
ACM Chalit maintained the CNS was sticking together and would spend its remaining time working for the good of the country.
The Council for National Security was known as the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRCM) when it staged the bloodless coup on Sept 19 last year and deposed then-prime minister Thaksin Shinwatra.
The generals changed the name a week later saying the English translation was misleading and falsely suggestive of the role of the King in the intervention.
This kinda explains what is going on with this coup, I have heard a lot misunderstandings about what is, and what is going to happen here in Thailand. The new elections are scheduled on Dec 23.
I totally disagree with this coup, and some of the things they have done politically here in the last year, as well as the trumped up reasoning behind it, but this article should help to clear some things up.
Please forgive me if I did anything wrong, this is my first post

>Phukphasuk<
...is that pronounced the way I think it should?
Pookpahsook, heh heh, these Thai names can look pretty funny till you get used to them, and a lot of Thai women have porn in the official translations, but you have to remember that the Thais use a British accent, in which at the end of a syllable or is aw
Thanks for the ping. Good work.
I accuse the Thai military and the Thai Sangha of being a bunch of cowards....They have lost all my respect .
They sit by uselessly while helpless and innocent monks are being murdered by the thousands (most likely) next door . And all they can do is re-shuffle their cushy positions . Thailand has enjoyed too much money for too long and they are now totally soft .No
wonder the Islamists think they can take them down in the South . They probably can !
